I think 2015-2016 for me too. A big fan of the computer, logic and rail system, I enjoyed making contraptions and machines. It was exiting with new updates coming out regularly with new features. Oh and I loved it when the etheral rails and the fleet system came out. I could see so much potential in the game if those were expanded on. Especially if humanoid MOBs and non-humanoid, were expanded on we could probably use them to expand the game play more.

It's interesting that everyone mentions the 2015-2016 (or earlier - 2016) time period. Seems like everyone can basically agree on that being kind of the golden age. If only we could have a server with a roled back version of that time period and maybe enhance stability and content with mods a little bit. I feel like that kind of server would be quite populated...

It's been done, (forget it), graphic advances alone (which were good)... in all seriousness: nobody wants to go back to that "Era"...
and sadly the game has not advanced much since then...aside from swapping "this block for that block", and the occasional buff or nerf.
Main reason most players left is because Schine ignored game-developement and server-stability.

I also doubt anybody is willing to "put in the hours" required to patch old systems with new graphics (even if it would be super-cool).

    My "golden-age" was 2018-2020.
    new graphics...
    new power...
    weapons 3.0...
it was all good, but beyond that: still the same half finished, buggy mess as before.

Me personally I dont think it was the game that was better then, I actually prefer it now. What i miss is the community of that time period.

My main experience and favourite time of the game was from 2015 - 2017. Since then and starting work etc. I haven't had the time to properly sit down, open the launcher and get going on this amazing game.

Just about to start getting back into it. Hope to see you all about.

Got to be 2014 onwards I'd say. I think I'd joined the CR by then and it was a pretty cool time. 2015-16 we had a few comebacks to the game as a group and they were fun, but not quite the same. After that it was a bit dead. Don't know how it's been 7 years though.

Edit: the second generation CR collapsed by January of 2014, so I'd say 2013 probably.

I don't suppose you are the guy who used to work with Komatodik on stealth ships as a private contractor. Lone wolf from memory, lone puppy seems a bit coincidentally named.

I just looked through my old screen shots and I'd have to say 2013-2014 the game was fresh and new to me and I built most of my ships in this time. Since then I've just been constantly refitting the original ships I built and adding a few more to the fleet here and there.

Lonewolf was my 2n (dark) character and I actually ended up playing 90% of the time on this one xD And i still remember the times with Koma, it was so much fun :) The stealthy ships, especially those launching diverse warhead weapons, were kinda my specialty back in the days, while Koma built more conventional and bigger ships most of the time.

2016 to 2017. When I played on the Starmada and then Star Squadron servers.

The game is better now, I miss that time period but would keep the current features if I could go back. Power 2.0 was a big change and it's 100% not perfect, (especially the initial implementation of the stabilizer mechanics.... jeez why...) but I don't really miss power 1.0 if I am honest.

Basically, as others have said, I miss the community and the game is far more buggy / has not officially developed in a long time. I miss the people, not the game version.

I still jump on the game here and there, but I struggle to find the motivation to do much. Without the community there is nothing to do beyond updating ships that you can't really do anything with.

My highlight was in 2014, with TilboTec, ArmTec, VFW (has anyone seen Dr Vecdorian [I really hope I'm spelling that right but it has been nearly a decade] recently?) The Saturn server, the inta faction "wars" and so on, I had a while without a computer and came back to power 2.0, n I've never really gotten to grips with it, hence why I don't really play as much, but I am planning on getting back into it properly, and making my famous, under powered, somewhat nice looking space ships 😂

100% 14-16. Power 2.0 was a blow, and yeah, lost most of our motivation and players. I miss Illusive more than I care to admit. The game was fun, but the people were the best part.

    My golden age is now.
I never really interacted with the community back in the good old days. I was like 14-16 years old at the time. I was greatly inspired to learn to build better every time I saw amazing ships being made by the goats of the era. I really hope that the ships I build now will inspire someone to make something even better 10 years from now.
My long term goal with this game is to reclaim my number 3 spot on the "most active authors" list as it was called back in 2016.
I lost the spot when Aceface and gmodism flew past me and I was losing motivation to build at the time (Late 2017 i think).
Grr, I'll not forgive those pesky swedes grr. 💙

Every once in a while i come back to this forum and/or I watch old StarMade Videos on YouTube. I mainly do this because I like the nostalgic feelings and it takes me back to a time when I really enjoyed the game and there was a lot of stuff to learn thanks to things like logic, power/shield supply beams etc. Lately I started asking myself: Which version of the game was the one I had the most fun with and which felt the most complete?

Of course there was this overwhelming feeling when I first entered the game right after the Yogscast Videos. But putting aside the bias of playing a brand new game - and a type of game that just hasn't been there before - I came to the conclusion that for me the "golden age" of StarMade was around 2015/2016. There were lots of players online, the new docking system, shipyards, ship HP system, cargo etc was introduced to the game and I really couldn't wait for the next update and was very excited where the game would go.

2nd place for is the months just before jump drives became a thing. There was a certain charm to actually flying everywhere and I usually used the 100% passive overdrive effect on all of my ships, since I really liked travelling from player base to player base. There was a lot of immersion to it, since you physically passed by some solar systems/planets that became kind of familiar with time. Also, space was a lot more dangerous back then and entering the area just around the protected spawn shop was really a risky move.

All this being sayd, it also had much to do with the servers I played on. I can remember having a hard time to choose between Redshift, FeedUpYourBeast, GenXNova, Sunworld and all those legendary servers with tons of people online.

So, when did you enjoy the game the most?
im right there with ya startmade has gone through some changes through out the yrs i have always love this game an will continue to play it infact im just now playing it after afew yrs what can i say life happens but i think i was there from the begining not right at server start but afew months after

I gave this some thought, and ended up trying to determine my "starmade golden age" by looking at my project archive. For me, it is mainly my builds that can determine the question, since I don't have particularly fond memories of interacting with other starmaders (didn't do any multiplayer or colab builds, although I certainly developed a liking for several fellow builders, based on SMD interactions or their youtube videos).

I ended up with the list below. It only includes projects that I personally rate highly on a subjective scale of coolness, noteworthiness, etc. If we would look at the sheer number of any kinds of builds, including unremarkable ones, than 2016-17 would be my golden age, but most my builds from those years were simplistic and inelegant. After 2017, the quantity went way down, but quality increased significantly.

So, based on quantity of decent-quality ships, stations, mechs and logic, it would be 2017 for me. But more like 2019-23, if we consider how much better those builds were. You can find all of these in the Community Content, links to download pages:

    2016: Interstellar Locomotive

    2017
    robot: Samurai mech

    2018
    robot: Korthex mech
    logic: Jetfighter game

    2019
    station: Alien station

    2020: Watatsumi battlecruiser

    2021: Pleiades fleet | Eratosthenes

2022: OrbHead freighter | Mobile industrial complex | Isaac hovercraft

    2023: Vortex/Velox gunships | Dugatti sportscar | Behemoth turret

    2024: Karkadann frigate | Mansion
