Read by Council New planet type suggestion to supplement dodecahedrons

I was referring to GRHayes's suggestion about the cube-to-sphere conversion thing. Not the continental model in the OP. Okay, even leaving that around how are you going to handle the 6 points where three squares meet? You only have about 270 degrees and you have to make it into 360 while still...

Or you know, we could not implement fixed stack limits because those are dumb compared to other options. I have a 10 x 10 x 10 cube of cargo crates. If direct stack limits are implemented, that's 35,000 slots I have to look through to find something. Nope. And even having the stack limit...

Upon further thought, I've noticed a slight problem with your idea - there are six intersection where only three squares meet. What are you going to do there? And that still doesn't change the fact that the blocks will change size, and people will notice that when they dock ships to a planet...

So what about if someone builds an orbital elevator? Should the blocks get wider as they go up? How do you handle structures that extend the planet into orbit? Yeah, apparently you can handle the surface just fine. But what about orbit? What about digging down?

Read by Schine Outline: Organizing Inventory/Storage By Volume

No it wouldn't. Volume would be a property defined per block type, not per block. It's irrelevant when the block is placed - it's only relevant when the block is in an inventory.

Oh, so it might not be a fixed number. Good, good.

Also, they mentioned in the news post that having the expanded cargo simply gives more slots, rather than expanding the stack limits. While I do appreciate the extra slots, that means keeping track of how much of an item you have in all slots, which could be scattered around the inventory. Also...

This is why using the "volume" idea has an advantage over this. In addition to the other benefits.

      Block ID shortage solution maybe

In regards to physics, the only complication would be checking the correct shapes. And there we run into a problem. As each entity adds IDs to its palette, odds are each one would add different shaped blocks into different orders. Which means during physics calcs the system would have to load...

HorribleHedgehog's stuff (UPDATE 4/8/2016: Amberclad-class cruiser exterior finished!)

Very nice (and humorous) presentation of the various parts you did. I don't see many greenhouses or sports things, so props for adding them.

Yes, I'd have to agree with you on this. I've suggested this a few times, but you've put this down quite clearly.

RE - inventory stacks are they actually stacks of "You can only have X per stack of whatever" and then have as many stacks of that as you can fit, like in minecraft? or is it something else?

Read by Schine "R" menu for scanner and jump drive computers.

I like this idea. But... So then I have to spend however long waiting for the drives to charge. However, I recognize that the concern about charging while firing weapons is a valid one. So... how about auto-charging only works until the ship fires weapons? You can try to run, or fight, but you...

      Star System/galaxy redesign

Heck, don't even calculate where to put things until a player gets close enough. And that goes for planets, too, though those should have a longer visibility range.

      Planned Stack Limits

The volume is an arbitrarily value chosen for balancing, not the actual volume of the block. It's a weighted value for determining how much of a storage things take up. Unrelated to the volume stuff has when it's placed as a block. Just like mass is defined, ID by ID, in the configuration file...

      Planned Stack Limits

^This is what I actually meant. Yes. This. To go into more detail, (and probably repeating a bit) each block type has a "volume"/packing space associated with it, and each type of container has its own "volume"/space to pack stuff. So say ore has a volume of 5 and the standard containers have a...

      Planned Stack Limits

So... poking this thread with a few maybe new ideas (they might be somewhere else though) First, having different types of cargo controllers, with different numbers of slots and capacity per crate block. So our regular storage has our "average" capacity and 35 slots. Then we have a bulk storage...
