I loved Star Trek First contact mainly because there wasn't any bs. Like you said, Cockran, and the scene where Picard guns down the borg and enjoys it really show alot about his character. He isn't so two dimensional anymore.
I always felt like he deserved to like it. Especially after what the Borg did to him.

He probably was traumatized or something along those lines. Picard did what he had to do to survive, whether or not he enjoyed it is immaterial.

    Don't underestimate THROWN daggers!!!

When you break out of a prison, will you be able to access a hand-gun
-- or more likely build a sharp piece of metal or ceramics or a 15cm long piece of plastic which you can ram somebody through his eye or neck?

We always assume that we fight in wide-open space like a hangar or mess hall where guns are obviously good.
-- Why do we NOT assume that you back-stab somebody when they leave the lift or come from the deck below over a ladder?

Not only is it safer to use meele weapons in environments where you could puncture a critical part of the ship...

... but think about how StarWar's Jedi-Light-Sabers reflect energy weapons with their gyroscopic effects.
If you are skilled with these, they could be shield and weapon at once - and don't forget their ability to cut quickly through closed doors made out of metal!

Thrown anything should be effective as a temporary distraction. The hit astronaut should check for a puncture in his suit. On the other hand, this suggestion of a suit-related distraction is something to shelf until more astronaut-life-support game mechanics are implemented in the game. After all, if you can boldly wander around space without a helmet on, a tiny hole in the suit won't stop you.

you called the federation pacifists i have disproved you and there have been many starfleet captains who have been war heros like sisko as mentioned by Snk then there is picard he has adverted wars and even won them bat'leths are not terrible they just require a refined mind and a way of thinking of using a weapon like that
...Um, averting war is kind of the ultimate pacifist goal, and as of Sisko, he's not only ONE GUY, out of an entire space navy, but part of the criticism and polarization over ST: DS9 is because it focused on war.

How about thrown Lava? Or Poison? Or Disintegrator blocks? How about that for a "temporary distraction?"

Anti-personal mines you can deploy on top of blocks ... and stronger versions against small drones which may fly in 4x4+ corridors.

About Sisko: I think absolute pacifism is not always good.
    > Think about the birth rate of Tribbles - x3 each 2 hours!

Maybe it's wrong to kill intelligent life in every generation, but every second or forth generation has to be war if there is not some "big accident" which controls the growth of population.

Just imagine 2 medieval countries of which one refuse to use any ranged weapons beyond thrown things - including guns.
The one which refuse will be annihilated ... and then only the gun-users will rule ultimately having both countries using guns.

You can't refuse to fight or your kind will be extinguish.

Guns, germs, and steel are the ultimate deciding factors of human history. Beyond that, it depends on humam energy. A civilization cannot be exterminated if it has mildy adequate weapons, immune to major diseases, and has decent infrastructure. Once that is fulfilled a war can be won off of human factors, such as the training or quantity of the soldiers or the intelligence of the higher ranks.

Literacy and education can help stop a war. Pacificsts need to read. Things like the Dominion, where they are looking to just conquer, no questions ask, happen very little in history. That is things like the conquistadors, Nazis, and the Mongol horde. Empires bent on conquest like the Incas, British empire, Rome, America usually work off of dehumanizing and outsmarting illiterate peoples. Most conflicts are made possible by not understanding another culture which can be bypassed by reading.

In a Star Trek context, if the Federation wants to remain peaceful they should read as much as possible.

pacifists would prefer to die than fight if the federation were like that well they would have been dead at least 50 times by now but they are not there are many starfleet people who have been in wars and won them in the end the federation can not be classified as pacifists

Maybe it would be possible to create some sort of basic generator to generate different looks of swords/knives that players and "mobs" can use, it would make the look(and maybe fighting) more varied, and not to mention it would be extraordinarily cool :)

So, I'll be honest here, i skimmed through what looked like a bunch of off topic star trek stuff :P

But Starlight here brought the conversation back around with what I also hope we can implement, a sort of weapon customization system, if not visually, then at least stat wise (but really, we all want visual as well right?)

We already have a decent foundation for weapon effect customization, it would be a pity to not bring it into hand weapons and expand upon it with melee options.

Here's the thing about building a weapon like a little ship: You wind up having to put a shell around the weapon itself, so it's hard to get a slim weapon. So I'd say that the functionality of the weapon is seperate from the shape of the weapon (what people actually see)
