I somehow think there are actually 3 main types of ships:
- Starter utilitarian (0 RP, ~0 aesthetics miners, sometimes with other systems too, but not too many, like a JD for example. Not even their builders/owners like them. You can help people get over these if you give them one filled BP, no need for more if that one can do the job.)
- Warships (90-100% efficiency as everyone sees it. Different play styles lead to different setups and shapes being the 100% efficiency for different players. Some external aesthetics are a must, as long as they do not contradict the 90-100% efficiency. Every cubic meter counts in size, mass and overall BP price. RP spaces are just as useless as they would be on a today's military U-boat. Exception would be spaced armor, where you can fill the space that needs to be empty with any crap you like, as long as you keep crap's mass low.)
- Pleasure ships. (100% aesthetics, usually low efficiency, usually plenty of RP. You can call them automated miners or pleasure cruisers or "personal ship" or whatever. The truth is the systems-only starter utilitarian ships mine more blocks per second with lower mass, cheap and without automation as they were and your "personal dreadnought", if you like flying in it and you are proud of its looks, then it's definitely weaker than a warship of the same mass.)
I, personally, would prefer to have the warships and pleasure ships chosen by me, by uploading BPs and filling the BPs of my choice by myself with my own efforts. But, this is me and I am probably mistaking thinking all the other players have the same preferences as me.
PS: The personal choice in what is your 100% efficiency ship, what are your pleasure ships like and where you want your income to come from usually dictates the size and shape of your home-station and of its shipyard (if you like shipyards). Unless the station itself is your most treasured pleasure ship and then other things dictate its shape, size, color etc.
So prefab stations will be "meah, it works for now..." for literally everyone no matter how beautiful and useful they seem to the server owner.
