As much as I'd hate to admit it, the suspense is killing me!!

DukeofRealms Any chance that we can know if planets are going to be around the same size? Or are they going to get bigger? I only ask cause I'm working on two planet based projects and I'd like to know if I should pause them.

Better not get banned from servers for touching these new ones with a thruster stick.

We haven't yet reached a stage where we will know, worst case scenario, same or slightly bigger. The main focus of planets is performance improvements, the current planets are (as all of you are aware), frame killers. Getting away from that is our number one priority. Size, design, aesthetics are all nice, but come secondary. I see planets being a "feature" we work systems into, instead of the reverse (how we'd normally go about it). The results of our development here will heavily impact future planet-based mechanics.

Size will heavily depend on a number of factors, particularly based on framework that isn't in the game yet, so it's very hard to tell. I'm happy with the progress we've made so far. However, we still do have a lot of work to do. Now that we've made our first reveal, there's a bit more pressure to speed up development. Hopefully, we'll have something more to share very soon.

We are focusing on bugfixing at the moment, cleaning up for our new release cycle. So, while we are currently working on planets, the main development work is going into cleanup at the moment.

I would personally take smaller, but more reliably performing planets over big frame killers.

It certainly sounds like you're working on it the right way around IMO. If the idea is as innovative as you make it sound, forming the game AROUND the new system rather than trying to force the new system to do this or that will almost certainly yield better results.

Size really is secondary. If they have the same surface area as a r300 dodecaplanet and the surface is less divided or divided in a more build-friendly way, the improvement in terms of usable area would still be tremendous.

I get the idea that a lot of players have spent the past week doing... well... let's just say "stuff" while staring at that gif. Any chance we'll get a glimpse of how these work, or what the main advantage will be if implemented successfully?

I'm impatient for the new planets, but this bug-fixing frenzy really needed to happen, so I'm not complaining.

Do we have any pictures of what the planet looks like from a distance? I am kind of confused as to what a cube sphere is lol

Well, last time an april fool's joke featured planets, it actually happened, so....

No rush. Seriously; everyone has waited, we can wait.

And we are really going from a position of have NO useful planetary surfaces, which means that so long as they aren't lagastrophic, even a r500 planet would be a vast, awesome improvement.

Many well-loved space games truncate the hell out of planets. If they mesh smoothly and I can put even a small outpost with a few turrets on it, I'm happy.

Apparently less. The devs seem very excited about their optimizations and improvements.
