Wish I had been online when this happened (thanks for tagging me!). As soon as I have more time, I'll be working on more female skins. There is a list of skins people have requested that I will also be working on of course, but it helps me to work on a few things at a time so I don't get bored of one project. In the meantime, feel free to share ideas! :D

I'm not sure, but I think I remember there being an update showing the new skins, with a female next to the guy. Maybe there will be a choice to swap, like with the helmet customisation.

That was a model done by a player (unoffical) that isn't supported in the game. I'm pretty sure that the ability to swap out the models exists, not sure about the ability to control which model is used by each player.

You're right, "xeno-striker" on the old site made an offer of a player model to the dev team.
Old site link to the forum post here: http://oldsite.star-made.org/content/starmade-player-model
I'm not sure if it's possible to switch player models right now, as you'd have to find a way to mod it into the game unless it becomes supported. And modding StarMade is difficult right now from what I hear. Also, if the model is different enough, you'd need a whole new set of animations, and the template would be different, meaning different skins too.

I believe the system used means you would swap out texture files, the model file, and an animation file that is associated with the model file. Assuming your replacement animation file is correctly done, there would be no problems whatsoever. (Easier said than done) All the models and animations are in fact done outside of the code, and the animation mappings as well.

Indeed. By taking a separate model and exporting it to the proper format with the proper animation names and file names, dropping it in the right directory will make StarMade use it. :) You'd need a different texture to fit your texture/UV map, of course, which also means the custom skins of other players will look -very- strange unless the new UV map is similar to Dave's.

I got in contact with xeno-striker a while back and have the models he made. :) I've been intending to make them available as a little mod (since at the moment I'm pretty much the only one who can get models into the game), but to do so I'd need to make a full animation set and go through the export process, and I just haven't had time. Not to mention the aforementioned UV map problem.

As for a female model, it's something I'm certainly keeping in mind. No promises, but it'd be a nice feature. I suppose for fun I could alter Dave's mesh shape (and leave everything else the same) to be more female and release that as a simple, client-side mod. ;) Only thing is, then -every- person would have a female body shape. Including the trader at the shop. Stubble and all, haha. :D His skin texture could be replaced with a female one, but if you went on multiplayer you'd still run into the problem for anyone who has a custom skin. Also, if such a model were available, there would be a lot of demand for a way to choose between them for different players in the game and coding that in is simply not a priority right now. Schema only has so much time, and he has plenty to work on already!

I just made one for the default skin by editing the genitalia for a female instead of the male if you want I could upload it. it just the default with the changed face and chest basically. I didn't really know what to call it though. maybe Ill make a thread about it and see if someone could name her.

here is a picture of the edits I made.

Because this is the internet. A predominantly male population. And despite the use of female characters in many games, few males actually make such content, so the availability of female oriented content is based entirely on the number of people who make it, which in terms of Starmade user-base, is very very low.

I disagree with your premise, while I agree in the past the internet was a predominantly male population, today I believe it is much closer to equal. HOWEVER, I will say it depends on where you look. From talking with people in the community here, I would say this community is predominantly male, but I have experienced other internet communities where the population was predominantly female. Looking at statistics and graphs of internet population, I have seen some that say there are more male users than female, and others that say there are more female users than male. Of the sources I have seen, when the given graph/statistic shows more males, the number of female internet users is not much less. This would suggest that the population on the internet is more close to an equal balance of males and females.

I also disagree with your statement that "despite the use of female characters in many games, few males actually make such content". A prime example would be the modding communities of Oblivion and Skyrim, where you will find many MANY more female armor choices than male.

I believe the reason there are not more female skins/female related content in StarMade is due to a lower current number of female users in this community. I would also like to point out that due in part to an updated player model, the skinning scene is still very young in this community. At this time, if you look at the Community content, how many people have posted skins? You will find maybe less than 15 people have published skins there.

For me personally, I am female and have released more male skins because I know there are a lot of guys in this community AND those guys might like to have the look of some characters I also enjoy from games like Mass Effect, or shows like Star Trek. I know that not everyone has the means or necessarily the artistic inclination to make skins, and I want to make skins to help those people. The second reason I make skins is for my own benefit, to practice in Photoshop so I do not lose what I have learned during my college career. It will benefit my future. Thirdly, I do it as a hobby for fun. I wanted to get more iconic skins out first, skins that people-who wanted a new skin and couldn't acquire one easily- could look through available skins on the site and find something they will recognize, something they like or can relate to. A lot of the iconic characters and the requests I got were for male skins. Having released more of the iconic skins I felt had to be made available, I will be moving more towards my own imagination for skin-inspiration. That does not mean I will not consider requests or release other more iconic skins, but that does mean you will likely see more female skins for me. When a new design comes to mind for a spacesuit/outfit/clothing item, it is more often female. I enjoy making the female designs (in some ways, sometimes more than the male ones), and I'm enjoying the challenge of working with the male model and seeing myself get better week by week.

I apologize for the wall of text, but I felt something had to be said, especially under the context of a "more female skins" thread.

If you disregard cellphone and all facebook traffic, because tween girls updating their facebook status doesn't count, and focus on game related sites/communities, the number of females is dwarfed by males.

I also disagree with your statement that "despite the use of female characters in many games, few males actually make such content". A prime example would be the modding communities of Oblivion and Skyrim, where you will find many MANY more female armor choices than male.
As an avid member of that very community for almost 8 years, I can say from experience, the female population, while higher then most, is still very small. Poll threads pop up every now and then and the highest female percentage I've seen was less then 25% and as low as 12-14% And as i said, the saturation of female themed mods really depends on the size of the community. The vast majority of such mods come out of Japan, or are largely created by a few individuals. Of the tens of thousands of mod users, a small percentage make mods, and an even smaller percentage make female themed mods. Again, as I said, many males may use such mods, but few actually make them.

On the flip side, there was only ever 1 female making male themed mods. Slof. But they were more towards the sadistic theme.

Agreed. ^_^ In many game communities it is still predominantly male, I was simply disagreeing with the statement that the internet as a whole was a predominantly male population - what I consider the internet in this context would be any site, forum, etc. and I didn't want to let such a presumption run too far. As I said, I believe there are more male skins here because this community is predominantly male, not that the internet itself is. I also believe that in the future where we may experience an influx of new people (perhaps once StarMade is released on Steam) we will see more players both male and female. I think it is likely that there will still be a much higher male population here, however, that doesn't change that I will still make female skins both for my own enjoyment and for others who want them, to use.

Also, I never said the Skyrim/Oblivion modding communities were not predominantly male, but simply arguing against the point that "despite the use of female characters in many games, few males actually make such content", many males DO make female content. Using myself as an example, the opposite is true as well, as I have currently released far more male skins than female for reasons I have listed previously.

Finally, I did not mean this to insult or to argue against the facts of a large male presence in many game forums, game communities, or even this community. I only wanted to point out that even though there is a small female presence on many of these sites, that we still exist, and that shouldn't change how anyone treats anyone else, but it does mean that we're here making ships and also in my case-making female skins. I felt the need to say these things because of your wording, but even more so because while playing games sometimes I hear in chat statements like "Girls don't play this game", not here I'm happy to say, but I feel it's sometimes something said to try to get the girls to speak up or reveal themselves, and it feels like being targeted or being shunned as a minority. I don't want those underlying tones that appear in some game communities to appear here. I don't want anyone, male or female, to feel like they don't belong here based on gender or current abilities. As long as people are friendly, respectful, and think before they speak, gender shouldn't matter and if they have questions, they should get them answered.

    tl;dr
I apologize again for so much text, but I didn't mean to start any argument, but only correct the specifics of a point that mattered to me. I agree with the principle of your response and I thank you for a quick and level-headed response. Again, it was more my past experience that I felt the need to nitpick, otherwise I wouldn't have done so, and I didn't mean it in any negative way towards you or your statements. :)

There may be many, but proportionally there are few, compared to the whole modding community. 1000 people is a lot of people, but compared to 500,000+ member community, they are at best a footnote on the total. Those that do make female oriented content tend to make a lot of it, which is why there is such a high saturation.

This site basically compiles a lot of it.
