If you disregard cellphone and all facebook traffic, because tween girls updating their facebook status doesn't count, and focus on game related sites/communities, the number of females is dwarfed by males.
As an avid member of that very community for almost 8 years, I can say from experience, the female population, while higher then most, is still very small. Poll threads pop up every now and then and the highest female percentage I've seen was less then 25% and as low as 12-14% And as i said, the saturation of female themed mods really depends on the size of the community. The vast majority of such mods come out of Japan, or are largely created by a few individuals. Of the tens of thousands of mod users, a small percentage make mods, and an even smaller percentage make female themed mods. Again, as I said, many males may use such mods, but few actually make them.
On the flip side, there was only ever 1 female making male themed mods. Slof. But they were more towards the sadistic theme.
Agreed. ^_^ In many game communities it is still predominantly male, I was simply disagreeing with the statement that the internet as a whole was a predominantly male population - what I consider the internet in this context would be any site, forum, etc. and I didn't want to let such a presumption run too far. As I said, I believe there are more male skins here because this community is predominantly male, not that the internet itself is. I also believe that in the future where we may experience an influx of new people (perhaps once StarMade is released on Steam) we will see more players both male and female. I think it is likely that there will still be a much higher male population here, however, that doesn't change that I will still make female skins both for my own enjoyment and for others who want them, to use.
Also, I never said the Skyrim/Oblivion modding communities were not predominantly male, but simply arguing against the point that "despite the use of female characters in many games, few males actually make such content", many males DO make female content. Using myself as an example, the opposite is true as well, as I have currently released far more male skins than female for reasons I have listed previously.
Finally, I did not mean this to insult or to argue against the facts of a large male presence in many game forums, game communities, or even this community. I only wanted to point out that even though there is a small female presence on many of these sites, that we still exist, and that shouldn't change how anyone treats anyone else, but it does mean that we're here making ships and also in my case-making female skins. I felt the need to say these things because of your wording, but even more so because while playing games sometimes I hear in chat statements like "Girls don't play this game", not here I'm happy to say, but I feel it's sometimes something said to try to get the girls to speak up or reveal themselves, and it feels like being targeted or being shunned as a minority. I don't want those underlying tones that appear in some game communities to appear here. I don't want anyone, male or female, to feel like they don't belong here based on gender or current abilities. As long as people are friendly, respectful, and think before they speak, gender shouldn't matter and if they have questions, they should get them answered.
tl;dr
I apologize again for so much text, but I didn't mean to start any argument, but only correct the specifics of a point that mattered to me. I agree with the principle of your response and I thank you for a quick and level-headed response. Again, it was more my past experience that I felt the need to nitpick, otherwise I wouldn't have done so, and I didn't mean it in any negative way towards you or your statements.
