Very very nice, the way you wedged the surface is a bit weird though, you should try using pentas/tetras to make it smoother (unless you like it this way, of course).

I would say that did it because I like it that way; but in all honesty, I just can't be bothered and has a nice effect as is. :3

Those are really great shots of the sun, you might want to remove the ships though, the kinda block the sight:p.

The thing is though, they aren't really screenshots. All of the images for this post were rendered out using cycles in blender. :D
And it shows. To good eyes at least. xD

We can come a bit closer than we are now, though, but at the cost of playability for lower-end computers (like mine). That said, a few things, like optional Depth of Field, along with properly-modeled stars and large planets (See the 'island planet' suggestion someone had) would definitely help this game look better at minimal cost if implemented right. (DoF might cause framerate loss, but can be disabled, so not an issue)

Graphics this good are totally possible for a game like this, just not in an engine that isn't meant to render in realtime.

I want beams like that in StarMade! Awesome work.

I doubt that a block based game would run very well with graphics like that (other games like Fractured Space running in Unreal4 can pull that off)
