I like the thought of the cryochamber for the crew. An alternative would be that when docked a station the crew disembarks for R&R.
R and R at the Bar; and you don't need to pay them. Plus the idea of currency means that you need to keep crew happy and paid, otherwise your big MOAShips that you built to blow up everything /might/ decide to blow you up and become the world's most powerful pirates.

Dude! could you imagine a mutiny... being kicked off your own ship? that would be worse than losing an experienced crewman. The closest thing I can think of is in WoW when you don't feed your pet for long enough, he will just take off. Except this would be worse, they would take off with your ship LOL

Now I have an excuse for building a hotel on my stations :). I always tend to build a pub, resturant, and a small shopping area for my social stations so it would be nice to have npcs frequenting these spots and spending some credits.

Though it would be nice to have something other than blocks to spend money on. A quick trip to the pub at a local station would be a great way to spend a few credits for a crew morale boost.

I think I'll open a casino. Get some dancing NPCs. Have shows and just hope the mob doesn't move in.

Maybe have things like food or drinks that can have effects on your crew (alcohol hampers progress, but gives a short-term morale boost... BoOzE!, rare food poisoning takes your crew member out of action for a bit plus hurts morale, a rare delicasy that boosts morale from a home planet or something) Then people in factions would do fun things like have drunk offs that would have your player drunk off their chair and have to complete challenges... It'd be hilarious. Or have foods or consumables that offer items that are rare or useful to your crew not your ship, food, drink, others, ect...
Plus yes, casinoes and bars and other places humans like to visit...

This is leading towards whole new NPC factions. Unionized work forces. This could get very interesting very very quickly.

And you have to pay your crew, feed your crew, make RP room useful... assign them tasks to do, heck, make them repair blocks for crying out loud!

Food, sleeping quarters, keep them healthy (MEDIC!!), and give them room to live, core ships no longer, interiors are now a must for a ship with crew.

This is starting to sound a little like Tron, we the players interacting with a "living world" of NPCs

Starmade SIMS, I'm down with that. We might even get a few more women playing. I'm down with that too.

Which would be AWESOME. No longer alone with no other human interaction in singleplayer, dense civilizations, trade stations to visit and a reputation to uphold, clamed systems and those for you to build your empire on...

And your crew would probably have to live on your station, and serve on your ship to maintain moral. Of course this would depend on the size of your ship I guess. When I was in the Navy there was a good amount of "RP" space on my ship, but if we didn't pull in to port every once in a while moral got really low. Also what about duty shifts, your stations defenses may be online 24/7 but the crew manning them can't be?

Time for hot racks. I would assume that on larger ships it would be easier. But for smaller seek and destroy ships, i.e. subs, space would be be very limited. I know when I deployed on troop ships the bunks were 4 high. You couldn't roll over in your rack without bumping the person above you.

A lot of money in the world's economy goes towards services and consumables, not durable goods. I agree that with NPCs we should see some non-block consumables or services to spend money on, like food and drink. Some of these could be NPC-specific, some for both players and NPCs, and some things just to provide variety for the player. Some thoughts below.

    Services for NPCs:
    • R&R: NPCs spent time in an area that provides "relaxation," on-ship or docked elsewhere. Maybe NPCs get burnt out and gain experience more slowly without R&R, eventually getting a slight debuff to their performance on-ship? Regular R&R gives them a slight boost?
    • Commissary: Change NPC skins (uniform dress), weapon load-out, or appropriate on-character consumables.
    • Hotel/Fancy quarters: a really nice place to sleep refreshes NPCs, giving them a "Well-Rested" buff
    Consumable items for players/NPCs :
    • 1-time use personal teleporters
    • disposable RCS thrusters (faster travel in space)
    • med-kits
    • stim-packs (health regen? +personal weapon damage?)
    • probes (disposable 1-block remote control camera drones)
    • mind-altering space thingies
    • fancy food/drink (slow health regen or buffs from eating is common)
    Services for players:
    • Cybernetics Technician: Customize player stats by adding or removing cybernetic impants
    • Virtual Reality Technician: Player HUDs, color-coded selection diamonds, highlight player/factions different color in view, change the skins your player sees on NPCs (Skeletons for halloween!)
    • Trade Consigner: pay a credit premium to a shop NPC to have them acquire a special shipment of blocks you need. Delivered via freighter to the shop and held on consignment until you pick it up, so you're guaranteed people won't buy them before you
    • Trade Broker: Players submit orders for X blocks at Y credit bounty. Other players could accept an order and deliver X blocks to the broker to get the bounty. Broker of course charges the order submitter a % or fee for the service
    • Bounties: place a bounty on a faction [x credits per ship kill, y credits per player kill, etc.], or a specific ship, player, or station.
    • Recruiting Center: offer services of your crew to others, hire red shirts, filler NPCs, menial robots
    • Ship Detailer: Paint a contiguous type of blocks on your ship a different color! Rename your ship.
    • Citizenship/Frequent Flyer/Honorary Member status: pay for "allied" faction membership, or a certain level of faction access for an AI faction. Ex. trading guild might have "Valued Customer" status which gives access to better merchants or a slight discount for one in-game month
    Fun stuff for all:
    • Eating/drinking animations
    • Dancing animations
    • "Screen-altering" effects (Haha, you're drunk!)
    • "Conversation" animation (slight posture changes, hands move, etc.)
    • Sleep animations
    • Child NPC models
    • Pet fauna
