    These challenges are fun! I was just wondering if it would be worth having a "Default Stations" one at some point
    I personally think such a contest should be held by Schine, if the stations are meant to be actual default stations. It also would require avoiding the mistakes made regarding the community fleet competition

    anyway, as much as I would love for our competitions to be held to the same standard as the official ones, the fact remains that this is a player-driven initiative, and Schine has no obligation to include our stuff from player-driven initiatives like this in the finished game. plus I'm still salty the official competition ships won't be implemented :/

    I think that it would be fair to agree that we are currently in a strange phase of the game. With Schema largely being out of the picture for the time being, the progression of the game is limited to a few individuals who are developing mods for it and a few core code tweaks to serve as a stopgap. As I said above, the last build challenge not only brought current players together, both old and new but also those who were active some time ago. It was fantastic to see some of the old names reappear and I hope that future challenges will keep everyone interested in playing the game from time to time, so long may they last.

    The original station competitions did bring in a number of default stations into the game and there were a few that didn't quite make it but almost should have done. The NPC faction contest I feel didn't work as there were so many excellent entries that simply didn't make it into the game and sadly, none were ever picked up as additional factions by adding in the code. We also have two default factions that still have many "temporary" stations. If you skim back through the older assets on the SMD, there are a number of great designs that sadly, are too old to ever be used and the original creators have largely vanished. In fact, many of those who entered that particular competition seemed to disappear soon after and it would he easy to draw conclusions as to why.

    Several people have done updates to the default stations and some of the NPC fleets but surely more could be done, with the right encouragement?

    It is true, all of these assets could simply languish on the SMD and never become part of the finished game, but with the open access nature of the development at the moment, and with it becoming easier to add or replace stuff into the game, it could be a risk worth taking? If you are just playing the game for fun, it is good to see your own stuff in use. I've found that when I stumble upon my own assets on a multiplayer server.

    So, next time you're stuck for ideas as what to build next, may I suggest you tap into the ships and stations that were released several years ago and bring them up to date? Yes, there are a lot of grey boxes but a few slabs, a lick of paint and some new power and weapons later and we can all have something new. Even stuff from the so-called master builders of the time look a little tired now and instead of them residing in the where are they now file, could be viable assets for both new and old players alike.

    I entered this competition (three times as it goes) for the fun of it. Not because I thought that I would win (though there's always hope) but because I wanted to share my enjoyment of a game that I have always loved. Personally, I think that it would he fantastic to see even the current default stations and NPC fleets brought up to date. These are typically just a bunch of files that I would imagine be quite easy to swap out with the old ones in future releases of the game (Starloader community correct me on this please) or simply compiled into an archive that could be added to the game. Also, so many people add ships to the dock as to being part of this fleet or the other (myself included), so combine them into a package and release them as a viable NPC fleet for everyone to enjoy.

    Thanks to everyone for getting involved. Even those of us who didn't place should be rightfully proud of our entries, the big line-up looked amazing and I am going to be checking out the rest of the ones I have yet to look at. Thanks too for the constructive comments and I am looking forward to the next one! Well done everyone!

    With 11 votes so far for the current leader in the votes, hopefully this challenge will be as varied as the freighter one? Already have two designs in mind just in case there is a last minute flourish of votes so now just got to see what the restrictions, etc may be.

    Somebody here mentioned something about the fleet submissions and their integration into the base game - that didn't pan out, true, but I'm pretty sure there's ways to add factions into the game ourselves. It won't be part of the base game, but these community events could end up with a shared file that has all our creations integrated! Whether we would use that for a game event or just signal boost it for other/new players, it could be pretty nice & create the impression that the game still has something going on :D

    It's actually a lot easier than people think. Currently the game only uses certain ship and station types and if we start building up some new assets, these can just be grabbed and added to your NPC fleet. I have done the aggressive faction and could have a go at make some alternative ones too. Add in the three or four stations that the game will actually use and the four or five ship types and we have as many NPC factions as we want. These can be added into the game as people want. If Schine picks them up, all well and good, if not, it's all gravy at the end of the day!

    Well... just how cheap is it to run a server these days? Nothing I've dealt with before tbh, but it has me thinking...

    Then you have fully answered my question and I can make my speculative post.

    If these comps continue to go as they are, then theres surely room to make a community server with all thats been said in the last few posts in mind (updated fleets, derelicts etc) with some extra flavour and fixes.

    Servers I've played on (survival) seem a bit bland and overly easy (WTF mining bonus?!?!).

    Anyway, just a thought for a few months time.

    Anyway, just a thought for a few months time.
    I have already been planning this. New stations and updated NPCs. A couple of selected mods and some custom configurations. My idea would be a fairly hardcore survival server, tiny asteroids with minimal resources and plenty of encouragement to claim and expand systems ( for example, in unclaimed systems you cannot gather ores and shards, just minerals, etc). The theory is that it will encourage trade but also piracy and conflict. A galactic free-for-all with a vague, "just don't be a dickhead" rule.
