It is important for everyone who plays online with other people to follow some basic etiquette rules to keep servers healthy and populated.
1) PvP is consensual.
There aren't really any non-pvp survival servers anymore, there is no choice here anymore. People who want to play survival may or may not be interested in PvP. If they want to PvP with you, great! If they want to just go do their own thing with survival and building stuff, let them. They aren't forcing you to build vast RP ships, you don't get to force them to PvP, its that simple. It isn't war, its a game, and games are meant to be fun for everyone. You play the way you like, let them play the way they like, and don't force your way on anyone who doesn't want it.
2) Offer to help.
People are going to have bad things happen, and it is currently possible to get so screwed in the game that you can't recover from it on your own. If you see someone saying they lost their ship for whatever reason and need a pickup, go pick them up (long as they aren't on the other side of the galaxy). If you're well established and a new player on the server gets their first ship with all their blocks destroyed by pirates, build them a quick mining ship replacement. It takes you 5 minutes, and it makes lots of good will towards both you and the server in general.
3) Do the rounds.
People like to show off things they've built. Volunteer to go look at them. Go a visitin'. Not only does it help make the server look more friendly and active, but you never know when the quiet guy in the corner is a master builder that you can get some great ideas from. Vice versa, let people come visit your station and see what you've build, especially the noobs that still need inspiration to build their own cool stuff.
4) Pass it on.
Some of the mechanics in Starmade are... a little obtuse (I'm looking at you, spaghetti power lines). It can be very confusing for new players. Take the time out to teach new players how to build efficient power, how to build turrets, what the secondary/tertiary support ratios are, etc. Just because you know it all without thinking about it anymore doesn't mean they do, and lifting them up lifts up the entire server.
5) Talk.
Might seem silly, but the reason most people play on servers and not single player is because they want to talk to people while they play. There is nothing they can build on a server that they can't build on single player. There is nothing they can't fight on a server they can't fight on single player. The entire reason many people play on servers is so that they have someone to talk to. So talk to them. You don't have to be a chatty cathy, but don't sit in silence either. Just a "Hey" when someone logs on can make all the difference. A talky server is an active server.
6) Don't shoot the warp gates.
Technically this falls under #1 up there, but still. Warp gates are expensive and time consuming to build, and are a benefit to the entire server. Don't blow them up. You know what it makes you when you blow up warp gates? An asshole. Don't be an asshole.
