How do you build your ship?

I build in a very true-naval-architect sort of way: Start with a keel, usually running directly beneath the ship core. Going by my plan for rough hull shape, wireframe the interior. Build the decking, leaving room for logic between decks if required. Build the hull around the interior, filling...

      Proximity/docking detection?

I actually used that feature in an earlier model of this ship--I just forgot that blocks have to be adjacent, instead of linked. Oops.

      Proximity/docking detection?

Some quick testing proved I'm rather foolish. Both the rail docker and the rail basic blocks send 'high' adjacent logic blocks when docked, and 'low' when undocked, which is all I need.

      Proximity/docking detection?

I'm working on a modular utility ship, and one of the things I really want to have is a light to indicate when something is docked to one of the modular docking points. I can't quite figure out a way to do this, though: 1. Independent systems on each side don't work. Rail docker blocks claim to...

      A minor factory annoyance

Thanks for the tips/thread link. A limit would be sufficient, I think—I'm asking for pretty much the same thing, just automatic, in a sense. As for sapsun, I don't build very big, and I have a pretty hefty mining multiplier set on my server. I like the idea of production and all, just not...

      A minor factory annoyance

I don't see how this critique applies. (For the record, I agree with you, and that's why I love the weapons system and rails.) This change wouldn't make blocks more special-purpose, it would just make them work in a more sensible way. The behavior as is is kind of unintuitive. Factories take x...

      A minor factory annoyance

You already get rewarded for designing things and setting them up better. That wouldn't change. Generic factories like the one I've set up are always as slow as the slowest material to make; a factory with a designated purpose will always be more time-efficient for a given block count. I'm not...

      A minor factory annoyance

I know how to do both of those things, but they're workarounds that add more complication. Here's why they're insufficient solutions. I have a generic factory setup: three basic factories, three standard factories, and two advanced factories in a row, each with a blade of factory enhancers...

      A minor factory annoyance

I've been setting up a production line in the hopes of starting to move my little friends-and-family server away from pure creative mode, and have been running into a little issue with the way that factories pull blocks. To wit: factories always pull as many materials of each type as they need...

Config option for salvage beam efficiency?

10x raw materials would be a handy block config to have around, I feel like. The long-term fix, of course, would be to support editing salvage yields for the personal beam and for ship beams both.

      nerfing, a cautionary tale

Which is self-evidently true, and altogether tangential in response to a question about which of the numbers a specific percentage is based on.

      nerfing, a cautionary tale

All blocks have 0.1 mass. Effects are ten times weaker against block count than against mass.

Config option for salvage beam efficiency?

There's an option for personal salvage beam efficiency in the block config XML. Is there a corresponding way to make ship-based salvage beams provide bonus resources, if I wanted more efficient mining? I'm currently using a universe with giant, sparse sectors, and I'd like to be able to set up...

      Starfish Yards

Spotted in testing: The Reliance Mark IV is rumored to feature jump engines, improved thrust to mass ratio, a much heavier, centralized point defense loadout, and newly standardized shuttle and turret docks ((that is, the docks now feature enhancers sufficient to fit the stuff they're...

      Starfish Yards

This album shows the process of construction on the Reliance-class, and in general how I go about building ships—I get a rough shape in mind, then I build the internals to that shape.

      Starfish Yards

Yeah, it's not the best of pictures. I'll get some better ones when I'm back at home.

      Starfish Yards

Starfish Yards Only the finest in ugly yet functional starship design I decided I'd make a thread to hold all of my creations, instead of cluttering up the board with more than one, so here we are.

      I tried

To do interiors first, you have to build with a final shape in mind. I'll post some pictures later in my Reliance-class battleship thread—I built a very rough framework of the exterior shape, then built the interior more or less against those constraints, editing where I needed for functionality.

      Can't edit posts?

Here's hoping. The particular use case I have in mind is Shipyard threads, where it's pretty common to want to edit the top post with new information or updates. I wonder if edit rules can be set by subforum.

      Can't edit posts?

I seem to be unable to edit my posts in the Shipyard section, at least. Did that feature get turned off, or is it a browser thing?
