      Range=radius; system size=16x16x16 sectors. Math tells me that a range of 8 should scan an entire system's diameter worth of sectors, however I can't confirm or deny if that is actually how the scanner mechanic works.

      Well, simply make the smallest possible shipyard in the shape you want (I guess that would be about 5x5x3, plus the computer), that way you don't get tempted, or at the very least you'll be through all possible ship variations in minutes instead of months : ) Also, percolating?

      I think that's easy to test... just add a block on the end of each of the arms pointing inward and see if it is still a valid shipyard.       Agreed, the current scanner mechanics are not very satisfying. For one, tie scanner range to the size of the scanner array, and possibly make larger scanner antennae take more time to recharge, not less. And/or have partially charged scanners scan a shorter range. Have multiple scanner systems...
