It is intended for capital ships. Its supposed to be a driveable version of the jump drive where you will be able to travel through sectors and steer. Since it isn't even in a dev build yet, that's all unconfirmed stuff.

It's not specifically made for galaxy travel. The galaxies might be large enough to warrant multiple hyperspace jumps. It's current limit was stated as jump gate range. Also, OP, you could have just searched for it. There are multiple posts about it since it was in the news post a few weeks ago.
