Pirates don't shoot unfactioned and offline ships, mate. <_<; Pirates also very, very rarely spawn. The vast majority of pirate spawns are from when you shoot a pirate base.

I would love to have ship style voxel construction of infantry gear - both weapons *and* armor. But it'd need to be possible to destroy an astronaut's weapons and armor for that to work well at all.
