I like it! It could be a component of the asteroid or planet plate generation routine with the blueprint integration component. No need for it to strip anything. Just have any blueprint as it is merged to some degree like the Alpha pirate station that has the Isanth embedded in the asteroid.

There are servers with greater variety, e.g.;
Australia uses tons of custom stations for derelicts and pirates. They have no NPC stations though.
LVD has the normal derelicts/pirates, but they have custom NPC's with custom stations.

This has always irked me, because you can see the ship in build mode. So it should be possible to make it visible to aligned players at the very least, but I would prefer only visible inside the ship. I guess the whole thing is a texture management issue. If this is the case, then the issue...
I'm not sure. I've been using this method for a while now and haven't had issues, but will investigate to be sure.
It definitely needs to be addressed, although steeling ships can be done a number of different ways.
