Small ships are more efficiently loaded if they do not extend more than 14m on all sides of the core.
I use sizes to the power of 2 in my ship gate classification system to encourage that and continue it on a larger scale not keep it easy.

Imagine a ship has places a block 1000m in front of it's nose. The weapons have now 1km more range without this 1 block affecting turning speed at all.
Additionally, this 1 block has a high evasion and is not automatically targeted like a ship-core.

I think that's the solution.
Not mounting a barrel on the hull outward, but on the hull inward and have all the cannon blocks in the base left and right of it (to make the whole 2-entity thing round).
The FPS is between 20 and 30 now after fiddling a lot with settings that are easy to overlook (no grouping at all).
But the FPS still drops to constant 14 while the settings window is open.
