I would like the shield to have hardened sections.
Maybe you could do that with ion-effect-affected docked entities.
If more gaps between relate to more efficient hardened sections (with any idea/suggestion) you have another balancing factor which is fun to play around with.

It is a good strategy but only nice until you realize that there is no way to track all stolen asteroids down!

Perhaps make an ORBIT. Large ships aren't dragged into the planet.
Instead they land and have to escape the planet's orbit.
