npc ships used to drop random crap when overheating.
the current npc ships do not carry cargo in their onboard storage that can be looted afaik.
pretty sure that should be changed in the way that simulated cargo transfer should spawn in ships ... no clue when or if at all.
please provide the logstarmade.0.log file from that failed gamestart.
to be found in the logs folder inside the starmade install
just drag it into an answer here.

this setup would work for example (red arrows are the links)
the not undocks on change ... the flip flop should work.
no idea if this is intended for some elaborate reason (maybe there is a way to make clever use of that ??)
however --- test parameters are only for this to work with...
Because that is what his progress over the 1+Year (from his registration Tag) is most likely what it is that he came from up to now.
It is on topic, not everyone is 5 years into Starmade by now
current games do have problems to run at 1080p 60Hz with middle class GPUs and higher settings
(where is the point to have the ability to have nice grafics on high if it results in slideshows ;) )
and not everyone can spent 300 to 800 on a GPU to drive a big screen
(or buy the usually 200 GPU...
open up options -> Grahpics and toggle Simple Lighting Quality to see if that changes something here.
there is a bug that messes the preview up when simple lighting is deselected.
UI scaling (or text scaling) is not a thing as of now afaik.
if i am not mistaken however that is still a thing on the agenda for development.
especially with the future of 4K or bigger screens getting more and more common
(i however am not very keen on that, because of the expenses required...
problem is the servers do not acknowledge that you have entered a thing there.
i wasnt able to reproduce that on the testserver ... with multiple logged in accounts at the same time.
seems to be depending on the server load or lag or something in that area.
i wouldnt worry about a head crash on a HDD in case of a power outage.
The head floats on an air cushion and in case of a power loss the head is moved into a parking position.
however ... all the files associated with running the universe are open and not closed and saved when the game gets...
are you able to zip the world folder with the problem and send it to me to see if it causes the problems for me too ?
do you know the coordinates where you log in on that world?
make a new character (change your login name) to see if it works at spawn. (i assume it would)
Its from this i guess :

Kingofanime i use both ... i havnt had a corrupted universe ever. BUT i do create new worlds very often and do not use big ones for a longer time in testing. ... so your reasoning might not be of entirely here (i sadly have no clue what the game exactly does on exiting)
disable any firewall/internetsecurity suite you are using to check if that may intefere.
change the port to something different (maybe it gets already used by some other software)
then start your client and connect with the new port number
