I like this idea, someone posted the same sort of thing a while back but reverse, IE when you enter an area you have gravity. This means you can just walk into a field instead of having to seek out a block for localised gravity

They kinda were, the devs added the ability to decide where the gravity is (on the side, upside down etc) but gravity elevators are nearly useless in that if you accidentally degrav yourself while going fast, you can end up flying rapidly to the back, and then you glitch out of your ship, and...
