500 FPS is optimal, because then it takes a lot to overrun your graphics unit, but it's not necessary on your end, because that's just way higher than you could possibly follow.
Plus depending on your monitor a maximum of only 60 or 120 fps are being delivered to your eyes anyway.

Actually 60FPS is the average human limit---some creatures can see several times that many frames per second, effectively allowing them to react like we're in slow-motion.
These creatures would be human beings, there is no such thing as fps in the human eye, what you are all descrbing is the ability to pick out induvidual frames from a continuing sequence in which case yes the average is 60, however that number can be as high as 150 in people like fighter pilots and really hard-core gamers. No it does not allow them to see in slow motion it just allows them to pick up on brief events that would happen too quickly for most people to notice.

Now back on topic, great to hear that your working on the Charon again keptick!

30fps is not the limit, that's a myth. It's only true in case of something flickering, where you can't notice things flickering beyond x amount of hertz (ex: a light). There's a definite difference with things in motion on a screen though. I have a 144hz monitor on my desktop, and fast moving things are noticeably less blurry than on a 60hz monitor (assuming I get 144fps). I get nausea under 30-40fps (and with lots of stutter).

    I don't have a gaming laptop, it's just a high-end laptop with a gtx960m and i7-6700hq in it (had I bought a "gaming" laptop it would've had a 970m at least).

Anyways, I reduced my draw distance and am getting 50-60fps now with enough of the ship loaded in to be able to work on it. For reference, on my "gaming" desktop I get 80fps with the whole ship loaded in, and that's with a 2560×1440 monitor (I play the game in 1920×1080 on my latop).

Would be a shame if you couldn't enjoy it fully loaded in :) One day we will surely be able to see ships of this size in combat with fluent FPS, until then, we can at least admire them statically. Large turrets put holes into thermal conduit paste as much as they put holes into virtual spessschieps, unfortunately, but thats no reason not to go big :D

Yea, I have yet to test it with full systems and all the turrets active but my guess is that it'd drop me to 5-10fps on my desktop.

I'm still alive, just having some hard times irl... I might work on the ship a bit if motivation doesn't fail me.
In your spare time make those ancient mining drones you find in stellaris. It's you title, after all.

So which does everyone think is going to be finished first, the Charon or Starmade itself?

I got your alerts at the exact same moment. Are you two just wired directly into the SMD?
