Factions like to make ships with "character" so as to promote themselves. Look good while blowing ship up is better than flying a JoelBrisco style 1000m long rectangle with a red light in the front.

Normal.png The answer is quite simple: It nets you respect. Making something powerful isn't too hard so long as you've got the supplies; just spam the living crap out of shielding, power, and weaponry. Making something strong AND beautiful? That's a different story.

Take my police faction's fighter, for instance. (pictured below)
    Trident Fighter.png
It's small and lightweight, but it also looks professional (IMHO), like it could pull you over.

    Now let's see a death-cube style fighter:

Can't take it seriously, can you? (Admittedly I just kinda threw this one together, but it's very close to my fighter in terms of performance.)

If I flew with a cube that is 1000x1000x1000 blocks, then I am sure it will have more respect, then a normal fighter :)

Pretty sure you wont. I am pretty sure an admin will "destroy_entity_dock" though.

I used to build doombricks at some point... well if not doombricks, they were pretty blocky, with minimal detailing, I barely used more than black armor and ice crystals... it took me literal years in Starmade to actually start paying attention to detail.

Why bother? Because I envied those who built great ships, and I was very dissatisfied with mine. I wanted them to look better, AND perform better. I wanted versatility, and I also wanted them to be pleasing to look at. To be proud when I say "Yea, I built that ship" and to be able to post them on the Community Content with pride, not shame. I wanted to improve and push myself to see how efficient AND pretty can my designs be while trying not to overcomplicate them.

Why build pretty, you ask? Well, because I want to see if I can, without making the ship useless. Because I want to improve my designs and make them look like they were built by a legal adult who knows wtf he's doing, not by some 6-year-old playing with Legos.

I'll have you know; I was pretty damn good at building with Legos when I was 6 years old. :p

...So good that I continued to play with them well into my adulthood.

I think the first time I ever played with Legos I was around 6 years old.
Got them for Christmas at my grandfather's. Opened the box there. Later, I tried to build the set at home. Oddly enough, there were fewer Legos in the box at home than there were at my grandfather's home. I wonder why...

Ah, the deep and abiding sadness of lost Lego blocks. (And they're expensive, too!) I know the feeling well....

Wow, OP really wants to justify building a doombox. You wana know why people take effort in building nice looking ships?
Well, every idiot can palce systemblocks and make a lagbrick, and im sure some people fail at that too.
The greatest challenge ist to build a nice ship and maximize ist performence for the mass you got, a 100k mass "ship" is not different than a 100k mass "brick", exept the fact that one put effort in it. This makes a big difference in a comunity.
No one respects a 1000x1000x1000 cube on a server, most people respect effort an compliment creativity, not lazynes.
Most of the big factions here use nicely done ships in theyr fleets, with great sucess, look at Trinova, Mortatium Legion, heck even Vaygr use some effort in ist ships, so that argument is gone.

And really, let the real world examples out, ist not real life, ist a game.

What irritates me the most, you ask questions in the opening post, people awnser and almost all comemnts disagree with you big time, yet, you dont care and disagree with all of em.

This. Exactly this. Anyone can throw together a 1000x1000x1000 doomcube, some can turn it into a detailed Borg cube, and some can kick its ass with a nice looking ship with a full interior 1/4 its size because they know how to absolutely max out combat efficiency and look good doing so. And trust me, NOTHING satisfies a Starmade PvP-er more than seeing a doombrick burn and its pilot ragequit. Nothing.

Do you think that 100k mass ship will have more systems then a cube ? You must be stupid to think that

Depends---is that 100k mass ship the Death Star? If so, then yes, it will. Because a sphere has a higher ratio of volume/surface area.

You must be stupid to think that decorative blocks and empty interior space used for RP purposes add significant mass. That 100k ship will have more (Mostly likely) ship HP, adding to survivability (Hull blocks in interior). It will also have a similar amount of systems, because a small amount . Biggest disadvantage would probably be size, making the good ship a slightly larger target. Even that doesn't matter all that much at 100k mass. You aren't dodging much of anything at that size.

Let's leave insults out of it. Go build your giant and ugly cube. Somebody else, build an interior-filled ship of some kind at the same mass limit.
See who wins. Switch pilots around. Try again.

There's a problem: One of the ships will have an advantage over the other, based not on systems space and whatever, but on the skill of the builder, because the weapons will be different. Armor schemes may be different. Shielding vs. armor tanking. There's hundreds of thousands of ways to build a ship, and so one of the ships will lose because it was built, not better or worse, but differently. Interior or no interior, there is no fair comparison between ships, unless you want a purely objective standpoint, which says the following:
To test this, you must get two ships with identical systems, down to the very block, but different shapes. Put them in an AI fight or 5, put them in several different player fights, see which one wins most. You've now decided which one is better at combat. But better for RP? The brick loses every time.

So, my point is, that the skill of the builder matters more than the shape of the ship, and that decorated does not mean decorative (As in good for nothing but being hung on a wall).

Interesting, Ill have to experiment with that.
Ive personally found giant spheres with multiple spaced layers (like and onion) to be pretty effective.
The dagger dotrine takes an assumption that you would always want to face your target because your guns are also forward mounted. Otherwise its solid.

I was kinda Wondering, why do we, as players of starmade, try hardly to make ships and stations look pretty ? Do we even need something to look good ? Why is vizual more importnat to us then effectiveness ?
Does it make difference, if we have ship like it was made by artist, or a normal cube ?

    Leave opinions below !
I build ships to rigorous visual and performance standards. I build the shell to fulfill the role and lethality for that build, then make it pretty. The way Starmade works allows you to build ships that way.

I can't vote in this poll because I believe both are necessary. There is no reason to build a ship if it is not original and pleasing to to the builder, and there is no reason to make one that has no purpose. They are not mutually exclusive.

I actually maintained a design philosophy on a MP server that If I made attractive ships people would not want to destroy them
You are lucky I wasn'the on that server, the prettier the ship I kill the more aroused I get.

So a builder HAS TO BUILD SOMETHING BEATUFIL or it is not worth it ?
