Starter Station

    Starter Station 2015-12-07

    A Purpose-Built Starter Station

With cargo and other changes, getting the basics is more complicated than ever for new players.

My goal in this station was something quick and affordable to build, but with full features to make growth easy.

It's a good station for new players to learn on and a good stepping-stone station for advanced players to use when they start a new server and want to amplify mining profits by refining/crafting to sell. I'm a function-before-form builder, so expect it to be a little ugly in places, but everything does what it's meant to do with very few wasted blocks.

    FEATURES:
    • Docking for 3 ships
    • 52K main cargo capacity
    • Integrated 2-tier factory installation with refinery & cargo
    • Integrated small shipyard with cargo
    • Docked starter ship
    • Transporter
    • Undeathinator that won't leave you stuck
    • Build block that won't leave you stuck
    • Artificial gravity
    • Shop
    • 6 Point Defense cannons on 3 axes & 2 small seeker missile turrets with 50% ion
    • Proper airlock (fun logic)
    • Stable small power grid
    • Cramped crew quarters with gear lockers
    • Space for expansion and modification

    NOTES:
    • With no shields or armor to speak of, this small outpost should be either protected with home-base invulnerability or regarded as a disposable/replaceable civilian station. With invulnerability, the PD turrets are enough to allow players to come and go without being repeat missile-sniped by griefers, and the ion seeker racks are enough to discourage roving pirates and enemies trolling in micro-ships.
    • Docking is not permissioned for public parking because the station is purposed for new players who might not know how to handle someone else's factioned ship taking up one of their parking spaces. Experienced players can easily make docking public.
    • There is an unused 4th wall on the station that is perfect for adding in additional features (another cargo bay or expansion to the existing, more interior space for RP, a stack of shields, a medium-sized turret, more power, etc)
    • The starter ship has good speed, jump charge, cargo space, a nice claustrophobic cabin, radar jammer, scanner, light shields and good defensive PD turrets. It has good spot-mining ability and a cannon able to take on small numbers of stock pirates (between the jammer & turrets it's nearly missile-proof). The cockpit kind of sucks and you almost always have to double-exit the core to avoid being stuck; this will be fixed in the next retrofit.
I already plan to retrofit this for improved appearance (wedge & corner some stuff, add in flashy-light-tech, etc) as well as perhaps slightly expanded storage & interior space in time, but I am eager for reviews/critiques and any feedback that could make this station serve its purpose better with additional retrofitting.

Even years after this was put out I still see these pop up all the time. Great little space hovel for most survival servers.

granted. feel free to upload your upgrades :)
Does what it means to. Looks decent in the process!
I like not needing to mess with setting up a first factory
knowing that once I've mined a bit more I'll just need
to scrap it and set up a new better factory in a day or
two with the profits from the first.
