SMEdit

    SMEdit 1.03.92a

i get a page not found while trying to download this
So, when I first download it, it works. Then I try uploading a obj file of a ship, and it crashes. I restart, the launcher for SMEDIT comes up, but the program never actually starts. Then, I come back here to redownload it, and guess what? The download doesn't work. My review will change then this is fixed.
I have to change my review. I was a bit harsh on Bobby originally. But in fairness, this is a must have tool for importing models to BP's.
Despite lacking in updates (not helped by Schines views on mods no doubt) I still rely heavily on it for making hulls.
I cant use it because it contantly says that it need an update! please rapair that or upload an update to the site
I loved it, still do for some basic conversion. However, I really would like to see it updated so I can open, and edit blueprints. It was a great resource for making super detailed ships faster.
No matter what I do, it won't let me upload any of my OBJ files. It keep saying ERROR

Really good prog, since we can works on imported basics and get a scale and shape about ship / stations. Like SkyLord luke, im still wondering how to get a perfect symetry. Now just cutting the ship in 2 and making the symetric with it activated on starmade. Thx for Sharing and working still on it :D Kara.

    ever had
Really great resource, glad to see it working again. Only problem I've seen so far is I'm trying to move a core around and once I place the block (beacon in this case) where I want it I try to import the new blueprint to SMEdit and it doesn't open it. Anyone know how to open a working blueprint to the program?
Handy but confusing (needs a manual). Spheres are spherical but kinda wonky. Still a very useful tool and especially if I can manage moving a core.
Opens to an options dialog and refuses to do anything else. waste of time.
If it has trouble loading up, delete what you entered for your starmade location, click apply, then re-enter it and click apply again. If you cant import models, try to import an existing ship first, then try again. Its a bit finnicky, but it works.
For those having trouble installing I made this video as the official site is dead now it seems, while the links have also been down for a while. I only found it was now here after doing a search for something related and there seems to be zero in the way of documentation currently. (not that you needed an account to download it or view the forums)

This is an essential piece of kit for easily making detailed hulls of popular scifi. While I appreciate Bobby's efforts I cannot give it 5 stars at the moment for a few reasons. I believe in reviews needing to be honest. And not 5 starred for the hell of it.

Current build is just updates block list to work with current starmade, and pretty much the first update in almost a year. With little to no other changes. None that I could see. Dev rarely if ever posts any updates. So it's impossible for any one to know what is happening with it.

I'll list it's pros and cons.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Pros:
Easy to install once you know how and where to put it.

Makes generating nice hulls easy once you know what you're doing.

If you can get past the unnecessary learning curve it has some excellent features.

Saves time when you can quickly and easily make a model in a program like Sketchup or Blender and export it with a few clicks.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Cons:
No real updates in a long time. Either to the software or a heads from the guy developing it.

Never know when and if an update is coming. You'll often have to use it with older versions of SM to work.

No information from dev and the website being down makes it hard for new users to know how to use it without searching old videos, many relating to the original SMedit, which thankfully still apply.
Not even a basic readme included in the download. You can see just from here in the reviews many have no idea how to get it working or what it does.

No optimisation. You think Starmades resource hungry and has high requirements? SMedit is more so and likes eating your memory and not releasing it.
I recommend windows 10 64bit, SMedit seems to be better with memory in it over windows 8. And a Desktop PC with at least 8gb of ram.

Perfect for small ships, but the larger you make them the more problematic it gets.

Can crash randomly for no apparent reason, so you never know what to expect each time you load it. Trial and error to learn what to do and not do.
Make sure that models got no holes before hollowing it.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Long story short, if you can learn how to use this, have no expectations for it being up to date, have a decent PC and love building in StarMade it's a great program.
If you're easily frustrated and have a low spec computer, avoid.

I'd love, as no doubt many would, to see this program worked on more or for Schine to actually add something official like this to SM.
Again I appreciate Bobby's efforts after the original dev abandoned the software. But a project like this really needs commitment and effort.

I'll update my review if and when the software changes.

as it seems even though I am all over these forums and everything from my signature to my personal info tells people how best to contact and talk to me; I will gladly put it here as I am on almost 20 hours a day and available to talk to about the development of SMEdit.

You can contact me and talk to me personally from my community teamspeak just be ready to use push to talk as it is forced on the voice chat.

I rated it 5 stars for the concept only.
I use windows 8.1x64 pro, latest x64 java update, etc
I can load the .jar file - but then I get a default ship,

I can't seem to make other ships load into the display, even though no errors on loading.

I can "Generate" my own new ship and play with it, but i can never load it back in another session.

All attempts to impot obj vrml etc files have failed miserably. yes i will follow mushroom fleet guide later to convert to binvox and try that.

mainly.. i cannot LOAD any ships, i can only see the default one, or create a completely new one from scratch.
Update works great for me! Only way I know to import models.
Fantastic TY for the update its good to be able to use colors and something besides regular blocks again for editing
I tested this version of SMEdit using a 32-bit Windows image in Virtualbox and it will import and create blueprints from *.obj mesh files. Since 32-bit java is limited to less than 1 gigabyte working memory, I can't tell what it's true capabilities are but it definitely does work reasonably well for converting.

Do not download, your just wasting your time, it doesn't read any blueprints, .obj files will refuse to import and as a user of the original SMEdit i can say that the old SMEdit was better, Whoever is making this "Hotfix" should go learn java, because they clearly don't even know java at all, All this program will ever be is a non-functional executable. until people who actualy know what they are doing take charge
After i set the preload to 2 gig, click apply, nothing happens. Win7x64 8gig ram.
