    Ares Aerospace is proud to announce the launching of the KSN FG-10 Echidna, the light assault variant of our Dyrae class frigate line up. This design will finish up the last 4 ships of our 12 ship contract with the Kushan State Navy in the GXN galaxy.

    The missile launchers batteries have been removed, and this has freed up the volume to install a destroyer level Light Gravitic Pulse cannon and increase the potency of the light shield disruptor by 50%.

    As a side bonus, removing the missile batteries allowed our engineers to downsize the extremely rugged power grid systems needed to support missile operations and divert the excess internal volume into a much more powerful sublight drive. To date, the FG-10 Echidna is the fastest armored warship we've launched.

    The mission profile of this vessel is brutally simple, close with the enemy and destroy them with continuous cannon fire, or at the very least, inflict as much damage as possible on the targets systems and missile defense grid, opening up the target to be engaged and destroyed by more conventionally armed fleet elements.

    Weapon Systems
    Nova Pattern Light Gravitic Pulse Cannon, this weapon fires a constart stream of gravitically compressed and accelerated synthetic strange matter at a combined fire rate of 3000 round per minute. This will literally shred lightly or heavily armored targets.

    Enhanced Light Shield Disruptor, just like our standard light shield disruptors but now with a 50% increase in power!

    Secondary weapons consist of a pair of our Ultra Light High Output Twin Autocannon turrets.

    Tertiary defensive batteries consist of 12 of our Mk 8 Heavy Phalanx anti missile turrets.

    This is a requested/suggested variant on the Dyrae frigates that I'm mostly posting here to establish myself as original designer before I start selling it out of my shipyards on GXN.

    Its fast and has a giant cannon, so the doctrine is pretty straight forward, get in close try and circle strafe to avoid return fire and hold down the trigger until the other ship goes away......

    I should also mention that I've built the three variants of this ship I intend to build, and am ready to start on a new project going forward.

    I downloaded this and its sister ships to spice up the pirates' spawns on my server; this is one tough ship! I haven't seen one come as part of a station distress call yet, but I have tested my first full-fledged frigate (~10k mass) against an admin-spawned one. Getting in range of the main cannon is a seriously bad idea, and the two autocannon turrets with overdrive shred armor fast. If the AI wasn't so weak to kiting, I wouldn't have beaten the Echidna.

    The reason that I didn't give it full stars is twofold; first, I think the ion beam could use a bit less than full effect. It shreds shields no problem, but if something dances a bit out of range of the cannon, this ship can't do any block damage. I know it's meant to be a brawler, but taking the ion effect down to around 95% would mean it could also start whittling away at the target under its shield. Second, I feel that it would be weak to a ship of its own type. There is some advanced armor on the front, but I think it needs a bit more of a buffer zone or a second layer of advanced armor before the cannon. It doesn't take much concentrated fire on the front of the ship to start chewing into the cannon systems.

    Other than those two complaints, I found the weapons and defenses quite nice. Fairly good shielding, and the computers are buried deep enough that there was little chance of sniping them out. Next time I test my ship against one of these, I'll take my own advice and defend my weapons computers better, I found myself without a main gun the first time I got in range of the Echidna's cannon!

    Thanks! I'll keep your advice in mind going forward and my next brawler type ship will be a little tougher from the front and a little more flexible on the weapon mix :)
