Republic Frigate refers to the only ship of the type seen in CW, the Charger C-70 Consular-class refit.
I knew they were classified as "cruisers" at least part of the time: Consular-class cruiser
But I either didn't know or forgot that it was also classified as a "frigate". Thanks for the clarification!
Tbh, what I first thought was that he meant the Acclamator since it filled the role of "frigate" in SW:BF 2 : Vehicles

The Consular is classified as a cruiser in the same sense as a vacational cruiser.

    It's not a military designation.

Okay; still, seeing that there are cases that both of those ships have been regarded as "frigates", I was just explaining my confusion. In either case, I understood what was meant now, and further reiteration isn't necessary.

You know....Cruisers were born from frigates. There have even been cases where large frigates have been reclassified as cruisers. Any ship that could operate for long periods of time, unsupported was a "cruiser", but frigates by far were the most effective.

It's all about the role the ship needs to do, and traditionally the role of the cruiser was solely the domain of the frigate. It wasn't until modern times that the "cruiser" became a ship type of itself.

Everyone gets hung up on size, but size doesn't matter. What the vessels job is, is what matters.

I never meant to indicate that size was the deciding factor; that is just a trend we see with US naval vessels (citing this as I live in the US, personally). I am very well aware the designations are based off of roles, BUT once again, the general trend is for those roles to correspond to various size ranges of ship.

Once again, I appreciate the clarification of the point above, and I appreciate being corrected if and when I am wrong, but we've already gotten past that point, and I'd appreciate the topic of conversation return to the actual point of this thread. Thank you.

In modern times, role and size are closely tied together (Somewhat less so now, but very true in WWII, the time period from where we draw a lot of designations). A battleship must, be virtue of its goals, be the biggest ship on the block, or its guns and armor will likely not be good enough. The carrier MUST have a full-size airstrip on it to serve its role, or it's just a useless piece of decoration. This requires a size larger than the (By necessity) smaller and fast cruisers meant to take out commerce vessels.

Frigates, the size class, were really replaced be DEs (Destroyer Escorts. Basically meant as a waste of space torpedo-boat killing machine (Even though destroyers were meant to kill torpedo boats at first...).

Let's not hijack this poor guy's thread anymore. I just started my own, and am always down to discuss the finer points of ship roles, ESPECIALLY during WWI and II.

    Sorry wizerdwolf. :(

It's cool man XD This is a completely legitimate discussion/debate, it's just not the topic of this thread. Thanks for understanding!

Oh boy, will I ever finish a release-worthy ship? XD I keep having different ships I'm working on, and then I jump to another before I finish the first. Currently working on a new frigate, and really like how it's going. Maybe once I finish the shell, since I'm hopefully not too far away, I'll upload some pics.

Hmm, I'm really thinking of starting a new shipyard thread for WTF. Maybe not right now, but possibly once I've got more content available (and while I will have a section for it, I am ignoring recreations in this as they aren't proper "WizTech Fleetworks" ships). Reason being is I've noticed how a lot of people setup their shipyard threads where the first post basically acts as a space to collect and organize all available and in-progress ships that is continually updated, and discussion following in subsequent comments. On the other hand, this chat has kinda-sorta-not-really acted similarly, but without the big list of projects and completed ships for the first post. I don't want to edit that into the first post of this thread either, as that would completely change the intention behind that post, and while it wouldn't be intended maliciously, I think it would make things confusing and possibly deceitful.

    IN OTHER NEWS!
I decided to derp around on photoshop a couple hours ago and made myself a banner for my sig :D
[doublepost=1496225855,1496225819][/doublepost]When I have said new shipyard thread, I'll probably turn the banner into a link. *shrugs*
