This is new... atm stuck at 7%

So ive been an avid starmade player for more then 2 year..

Ive seen most bugs in my time here, and solved most of em..

But last night ive hit a new problem..

I wana start of by saying that im no pc wizard, and im gona need a little help to find the log's (they seem to be important to programmers) :P
(edit 2 : i put in some more efford, and hopefully linked the right log)

Anyways.. Here is what happend...

Ive been playing starmade on my new beastly pc that i bought, bout 2 weeks ago and have been having no issues at all..

Then last night, i wanted to change my resolution.. i went from 1600x900 to 1280x720... game crashes..

I try and launch the game again, but after pressing "launch game" nothing happends... After a few times trying to launch, i reboot... nothing happends... still nothing..

So as an experienced starmade player, i know that making the game run, is sometime an even bigger problem then playing it (the reason why starmade is still a small playerbase game, its to buggy and broken) so i begin the usuall routine..

Reinstall the game, tried both versions of the launcers 5 times each (not the steam version) with full deletes of past versions.
Everything is in the right places )c:starmade) and yet the game is still dead..
At this point ive reinstalled the game bout 5 times, java 3 times, rerolled graphics drivers, tried switching to gpu only and the only thing i can get the game to do is, get to around 7% loading and it crashes and gives me a "eofexception null error"... (edit : ive tried logging on again, and as a guest, to see if it was server side)

Nothing was downloaded or updated leading up to the crash or after.... it happend out of the blue, and now the game wont run at all...

Dear devs, i read you post on the new power system.. and ye it looks... interesting.. But you have to realise that the game need to get out of the state were its buggy as fk.. Ive tried to get so many friends to play starmade, but you loose half of em just in the instalation procces of the game... and then you get ingame (survival) and relise how buggy it is in there aswell.. Stations/ships/blocks/credists dissapering and stuff..

You really have to love this game to play it.. alot... Thankfully i do love it, but this time, i comming up short.. what the fk is going on with my game ? <3

P.S. Shoutout to AndyP, i had the plessure of discussing turrets some time ago on the 40k server.. a true plessure... Andy, please help...

Are you by chance an Nvidia user? - if so, could it be this causing you woe? NVIDIA Driver 378.49 (released jan. 24 2017) may cause crash on startup

Yes im an Nvidia user.. one of the first things i did was to rollback the gfx driver when i started searching the forums for answers.. There 2 old drivers from december 2016, tried both, same result.. nothing...

I was streaming at the time.. and thinking back, i actually had issues with obs not wanting to capture starmade as usuall (as a game).. i had to do a capture screen to make it work.. (any clues for a programmer ? )

This is absurdly frustrating.. When i bought the new pc, i started on a new server, grinding harcore.. After 2 weeks, of straight farming and getting base rdy for members, i was finally at the point were i was established on the server with an economy, invited a few members... And now... ye.. gg

Im no programmer, but here is what i "feel", ive had starmade bug out, chrash and detroy itself countless times.. Ive allway been able to fix it.. either reinstall the game or java, usually fixes it.. But this is different.. Even a fresh reinstall, and its like nothing has changed.. Its like there is a saved setting somewere that i cant delete (maby because im clueless) that forces my freshly installed game into "i do not want to work mode"

Hmmm... I take it you're using a custom java install (ie for 64bit), is the path correct on the launcher? - I;ve had weird issues with that in the past where its suddenly reverted to the inbuilt version that comes with SM. Other than that I've no ideas I'm afraid.

Yeah, ive done it so many times over the years, that i know the install insideout.. Offline 64bit version, making sure you delete the old content.

So, even though i have no clue about what the log says, i had to read tru it a bit..

And ive noticed somthing.. Reading the forums/internet, i remember somone saying somthing about their keyboard.. And in my log (least to my eyes, it looks like i got the same issue (and maby more, i dont understand the log tbh)) The keyboard havent been changed, unplugged or updated leading up to the crash..

Im gona repeat.. Ive done no updating on anything leading up to the crash... Im actually baffeld this time.. Like i said, i belive over the last 2 years, starmade has broken itself/java, and ive fixed it least 20 times. But ive allways been able to make it run again, after fresh reinstalls..

But this time is different..

What haves me really confused is..

My pc is 2 weeks old (beastly)

I get the pc, dl driver, dl starmade. and been playing for 2 weeks..
All of the sudden, it dosent work, and i cant even reinstall..
Everything else works... all other games/programs.. Hardware..
Only Starmade is broken... as usuall..

It crashes at the first loading screen at 7%...

I can open the launcher, press launch...

Right after the crash occured, when i tried launching (pressing launch) nothing happend, it didnt even open the game and load

Its only after all the reinstalling, that ive made it open the game, but its stuck at 7%..

And, your question is not silly imo.. Since it seems that it was what begain all this crap.. I was playing with the resolution because, on the crash day, obs wouldent capture starmade, with the settings i allways use.. So i wanted to see if playing the game in the ress i was streaming would help... guess not :D

If I remember correctly I had this issue over a year ago (possibly even 2 years ago). My memory is fuzzy and this won't be much help but I'm pretty sure it was a Java issue rather than a Starmade problem. Do you have both 32bit and 64bit Java installed? Do you remember the exact error message you got?

Ive made sure, that all java content was uninstalled before, ive installed the offline 64bit version (recomended) so java 32, and 64 dosent get confused..

Like said, ive done this so many times that, im pretty sure i can do it in my sleep at this point.. First time ive felt the need to make a post..

In the years i have played starmade, i have learned all about all the ways the game can crash/instaall the wrong way/wrong order/and other amusing events ~ And ive become way more familiar with java... ~

When i launch, the game launches and stops at 7%. I cant tab out, its frozen.. All i can do is ctrl alt del, joblist.. then and only then am i allowed onto my desktop. and on the desktop i get the message :

EOFException: null
options:
Retry/Send crash report/Exit

I have never seen this before.. As i mentioned earlier, ive allway been able to fix the game with a fresh install. somtimes only the game, somtimes both the game and java.. Ive accepted that, if you wana play starmade, you learn to reinstall..

Tbh, i spend so mutch time in chat on servers, explaining to new ppl how to make their game work..

New player : Wtf, everything is lagging

Me : *yay, here we go, 20-30 minuttes of explaining java installing to yet another playter, that eventually will prob leave..

New player : What the heck, my credits are gone

Me : Ye, its starmade... Man up

(Im a kind guy, so a part of my way of setting up on a server, is to setup what i need, but allways make a good small farmer, i can afford to spawn alot of.. i give em to new players that loose their stuff, either to pirates or bugs in an efford to make em stay and not leave like they would with no help. I would looooooove to see the game grow.. I dream of the days we top twitch)

(i actually had a stack of green standard armor, bout 80k disapeering on me 2 days ago, while building.. from 1 sek to another the stack was gone.. And yes, im sure i didnt drag trow it away, i checked.. Im +30 and have played the game for years, so i srugged my shoulders, and made another stack.. But... ive seen this happen to new players.. they loose stuff they farmed for like crazy.. 90% of em ragequit, and we never see em again)

New player : What da heck, i just warped, and all my turrets are gone

Me : Hmm.. try relogging

New player : *Relogs* Wtf, they are still gone ?!

Me : Hmm, welcome to starmade

New player : Leaves starmade

(im raging here a bit, sorry devs i love the game, but im frustrated)

Sometimes i fell like a fool for playing survival... Loosing stuff in creative is easy.. its creative. You just spawn you latest save.. Survival on the other hand, ye you have the save, but, you need to get the materials... again!?¤%! to a bug ?!?!? (it would be like playing warcraft, and all of the sudden the gear you farmed for, is gone, and you have to start over) Its killing the game on a fundamental level.

The only players that get past this point, is the ones realising they need 2x the materials "just in case"
and accept it as a part of playing the game.. For me it chill.. I lost a 2x2x1 km base on the 40k server once.. An entire base, gone.. Some of the best admins on that server... and they found no trace...
So ye, i srugg my shoulders when i loose stuff to a bug these days...

The expansion of the playerbase is in survival... And survival only consists of a few crazy ppl, with way to mutch time on their hands(me) that know the game close to inside out, and then alot of "visitors" that eventually gets killed of by either bugs/loosing all theirs stuff, even if the few crazys are trowing all the advice they got at them.. in vain..

I love the absurdly steep learning curbe in the game (reminds me of vanilla wow) but that combined witth bugs, is simply more then most the generall public can handle.. least imo.. (reason for the small playerbase)

Survival has so mutch potential.. But most ppl end up scared, allways hooked up to their homebase, never leaving it, cuz they are afraid of loosing months of hard work, to a glitch/lag or somthing..

I love fearing space and the danger it can hold...

I hate the constant looming danger of "poof magic just made somthing disapeer lulz"

Anyways.. 1rst rule of starmade : Never undock what you cant afford to loose..

Looks pretty much like a broken file on the disk/installation.

Please use the options and repair menu to check and fix all broken files in your installation.


Make sure the dropdown selection has the "(Latest)" at the end.

Should work afterward.

Secondly.. Wow.. just wow.. the only option i didnt try... i even tried the force download at some point.. I feel like a complete idiot..

Anyways.. Irl im a mecanic, my life consists of me allways finding out "Why".... How can what you just told me, fix somthing a full uninstall/install wont ?
Andy, can you in any, short, way.. explain to a mecanic, why it happend ? I apreciate your answer, cause it works now, but, i need to know, why ?

Well the file looked like it ended too early. "EoFException" - End of File.
As picture files are usually very small its unlikely they do not finish downloading.

So at some point in the installation, a short connection outage or delay, cause a file download to timeout unnoticed.
Leaving a corrupt file behind.

The "download normal" uses the checksum list from our server, and compares every file in your installation with it, and downloads + overwrites it. While a force download can in theory lead to the same unfortunate situation where a short download burst corrupts the same file again.

Im still a bit confused tough.. I install the game.. play it for 1-2 weeks no prob.. im streaming, changing ress at the same time. Game crashes..

So, that triggered the corrupt file ?

Or do you mean by "instalation" is me playing and some corrupt file generates while playing ?

And last.. In any case, how would me uninstalling every single starmade file on my drive, reinstalling the game again( several times) not fix the corrupt file ?

In short, were the fk, was that file hiding ?

If you dont feel like explaining, and im way of in my spekulations (no pc wizard) just reply "yeaah dude, we will look into them turrets ;P

Edit : After reading you answer a few times i understand it better.. So the combo of stuff that went wrong on my side, generated a glitced file on the "starmade" server.. so i kinda had to "phone" you and say yo, im good again ? The fix you showed me was a fix on both ends, not just my physical drive ?

To sum up the thread.. AndyP's advice did help and fixed the problem.. So guys, b4 you go into the usuall routine of reinstalling java/starmade/windows/your life, least try the 2 options in the menu, before you go down the road i did...

lol. Just as an after the fact diagnosis: Do you have an antivirus running? Check it's quarantine for starmade files if you do. Changing resolutions might have tricked the AV into thinking starmade was doing unauthorized activity.
