Interestingly enough certian shaped ships resist and mitigate damage a lot better than others, a good eaxmple is a cube vs a sphere. A missile will do less damage to the sphere than the cube as more of its damage is wasted in empty space. A ship with lots of spikey bits (like a hedgehog) would take very little damage at all from missiles without having to use Point defense
That depends on the radius of the sphere and whether missiles collide with the spikes.

We shouldn't require another sort of checker-board-pattern again (with spikes).

Wasn't there a problem with donut ships, and the guided missiles would pass through the center?

Yes. there WAS an issue with this, but it got fixed. Missiles (and all other AI) targeted the Center of Mass for a short period of time, meaning a donut ship was essentially immune to turrets and lock ons.

Missiles and AI turrets now target a random system block.
