Swapping out an engine isn't done easily. But seriously, what if StarMade's engine was swapped out for one capable of generating realistic, spherical planets with smooth terrain (basically making planets and asteroids realistic and ships are still modular), but still utilizing voxels (except smooth; planet explorers is a good example of this)
This would solve the issues with the inconsistent planets we have right now (dodecahedrons are great but they feel clunky because, well, they are) and would probably push StarMade towards giving players a better feeling about the universe they're in. It may also improve performance simply from the consistency of having a single entity representing a planet.
I'm not saying this is something that needs to be done immediately, that would be unreasonable. However, I strongly feel that the planets we have right now are placeholders for StarMade's true potential.
We don't have to limit ourselves to blocks.
Like I said, it should be a goal.Swapping out an engine isn't done easily.
Especially if the current one is made and optimized for that specific game. StarMade and the Schine™ engine are 2 sides of 1.5 coins. (If you understand)
It still feels weird transferring between gravity the way we do. I mean, even if the bugs and glitches are ironed out, with the way planets are, it's always going to be choppy.I actually like the planets we have now, the edges are better on the planet, they cause less lag and they load faster.
Ftfy; thanks for your input.clunky and unenjoyable planets.
the planets don't have to be a "separate game" from the rest of the universe, but they might as well be pretty and fun while we're there. My argument is that a year ago players wanted double sided oreos and cube worlds. Now we have dodecahedrons and players want spherical worlds. I do not understand it. Schema spent a year talking to other devs about how round planets could be a thing. They thought of solutions. They thought of the problems. This is what they came up with. Planets are not intended to be a separate game from the rest of the universe. After all it is called starmade. This is why we do not see any attempts to make planets massive round worlds.
Damn straight they aren't finished yet. But when they are "finished", I imagine it'd be less fun to skip across giant plates on a rough shape to go manage your breeding farm or what have you.I think people just like to point out the negative because right now planets have little to offer in terms of gameplay. There are no animals or plants to grow. Mining has only just recently became harder now that build blocking is out. In the future we may not even be able to use a ship to mine a planet which is awesome and I agree with that. NPC's may inhabit them in the future. Players complain about planets because they think they know whats wrong with it. There's nothing "wrong" with them. They are not finished yet. Why don't we wait for more interesting features to be added to planets before we start complaining about how terrible things like gravity transitions are. I would be more upset if schema somehow severely messed up the NPC's that are suppose to generate there.
yes that's exactly what i'm suggesting you are a wizard 11/5So, you're basically suggesting that schema should totally rewrite the game from the ground up into a space engineers copy that would completely destroy common computers?
-1.3/10 (and that was generous)
Yep, my stupid suggestion detection skill is maxed out!yes that's exactly what i'm suggesting you are a wizard 11/5
Your reasoning could use some leveling up though.Yep, my stupid suggestion detection skill is maxed out!
The same effect could be achieved with determining a set area for a faction on a less limited planet.I like the planets and a good thing about it is it has plates, plates are good if you have a faction, each person in the faction could have a planet plate to build on.
And yet if it works now then why change it.Your reasoning could use some leveling up though.

alright i get it just don't be an ass about itGeneric round planet thread #2987423948723984724928374u923048023948 detected
