But seriously, what if StarMade's engine was swapped out for one capable of generating realistic, spherical planets with smooth terrain (basically making planets and asteroids realistic and ships are still modular), but still utilizing voxels (except smooth; planet explorers is a good example of this)

This would solve the issues with the inconsistent planets we have right now (dodecahedrons are great but they feel clunky because, well, they are) and would probably push StarMade towards giving players a better feeling about the universe they're in. It may also improve performance simply from the consistency of having a single entity representing a planet.

I'm not saying this is something that needs to be done immediately, that would be unreasonable. However, I strongly feel that the planets we have right now are placeholders for StarMade's true potential.

We don't have to limit ourselves to blocks.
Swapping out an engine isn't done easily.
Especially if the current one is made and optimized for that specific game. StarMade and the Schine™ engine are 2 sides of 1.5 coins. (If you understand)

Like I said, it should be a goal.

I actually like the planets we have now, the edges are better on the planet, they cause less lag and they load faster.

It still feels weird transferring between gravity the way we do. I mean, even if the bugs and glitches are ironed out, with the way planets are, it's always going to be choppy.

My argument is that a year ago players wanted double sided oreos and cube worlds. Now we have dodecahedrons and players want spherical worlds. I do not understand it. Schema spent a year talking to other devs about how round planets could be a thing. They thought of solutions. They thought of the problems. This is what they came up with. Planets are not intended to be a separate game from the rest of the universe. After all it is called starmade. This is why we do not see any attempts to make planets massive round worlds.

Planets with smaller plates for increased roundness hinder large planet builds. I would prefer to not have my city bend around the planet. I'd rather keep it simple and build on a flat area.

People complain about gravity transitions. If schema can figure out a way to do things like build helper (which as far as I know is something I have never seen in another game before) then I am sure he can fix it. Honestly it is never really an issue for me. Yet players treat it like its game breaking. AND on top of that people use gravity elevators all the time. How is it justifiable to swap gravity on a ship for easy transport and then get overly irritated when you face the wrong direction once landing on another planet plate? Seriously?

I think people just like to point out the negative because right now planets have little to offer in terms of gameplay. There are no animals or plants to grow. Mining has only just recently became harder now that build blocking is out. In the future we may not even be able to use a ship to mine a planet which is awesome and I agree with that. NPC's may inhabit them in the future. Players complain about planets because they think they know whats wrong with it. There's nothing "wrong" with them. They are not finished yet. Why don't we wait for more interesting features to be added to planets before we start complaining about how terrible things like gravity transitions are. I would be more upset if schema somehow severely messed up the NPC's that are suppose to generate there.

So, you're basically suggesting that schema should totally rewrite the game from the ground up into a space engineers copy that would completely destroy common computers?

    -1.3/10 (and that was generous)

the planets don't have to be a "separate game" from the rest of the universe, but they might as well be pretty and fun while we're there.

Damn straight they aren't finished yet. But when they are "finished", I imagine it'd be less fun to skip across giant plates on a rough shape to go manage your breeding farm or what have you.

I like the planets and a good thing about it is it has plates, plates are good if you have a faction, each person in the faction could have a planet plate to build on.

Yep, my stupid suggestion detection skill is maxed out!
Your reasoning could use some leveling up though.

I like the planets and a good thing about it is it has plates, plates are good if you have a faction, each person in the faction could have a planet plate to build on.
The same effect could be achieved with determining a set area for a faction on a less limited planet.

And yet if it works now then why change it.

Also, as I stated before, there is no way to incorporate a rounder planet and keep it the same size and also keep what current things we like about the planets in the game. Else-wise they would need to be larger. Larger does not equal better.

If you are so bothered by skipping across plates to manage things before those things are even in the game yet then I am surprised you are still a part of this community . Especially so when we consider: we have to use cameras to view different areas, we must fit numerous systems on ships, we must design their looks and learn logic for auto gravity elevators. All these things can hinder our gameplay experience to a degree and add to it in others.

BUT HEAVEN FORBID WE HAVE TO WALK TO ANOTHER PLATE TO MANAGE WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY UNDEVELOPED FEATURES AS STATED BY THE OP

You dont want to jump to a different plate? Then increase planet size. Problem solved. @Tomino_sama managed to build a massive amount of stuff on one plate of a planet, let alone what the MF community did to the rest of the plates.

Seriously. If that is your excuse for this thread then there is no argument.

@Ithirahad You obviously disagree with me, please explain how the OP's suggestion would work. Notice how the @ResonKinetic edited his first post to say that it didn't work?

@keptick: While I doubt that @ResonKinetic's suggestion will work, I'm really just trying to say that I have about the same attitude about the current planets as he/she does... They're, in a word, awkward. The edges are messy and disorienting, the design itself is offputting, and the way they're set up the entire planet has to load for it to be smooth... Etc. While more content on planets might mask the problem, it still won't fix it... There ARE solutions - several solutions, I believe. None of them ideal, but some much better. Personally, I'm a fan of much larger planets, with square(ish) segments, each perhaps 200x200... like this:

    (Possibly with more segments)
Ideally, the planets would look fairly smooth, and not all of the planet would have to load immediately for it to not look funky. But there are other ways to do it...
