Just had an idea for using shields with the slaving mechanism:
You have to option of connecting a cluster of shields to a shield control computer, allowing it to be toggled, and a weapon system to be slaved to it in the normal way. Having a slaved system blocks up to 99% of damage from that weapon, letting through 1%. While letting through the inverse amount of other kinds of damage. The higher the ratio of weapon to shield, the more of one type of damage blocked, and the more of others let through.
Shields of the normal type would remain, but they would be nerfed so that you have to choose between several specialized shields or one inferior meh shield.
Probably should balance things so that harder to use weapons are harder to defend against.
