There is a change coming to the metals in Starmade!
Along with the new planet shapes, we are taking this opportunity to revamp the mineral generation system the game uses to better fit a streamlined cubatom/factory crafting system (aimed at solving many current issues with crafting.)
What does this mean for you? It means that you will now find veins of ores or crystal embedded in the rock beneath your feet. No longer will you simply mine any one of sixteen randomly named metals with an odd density level of L1-L5. Now you will simply discover clusters of an ore and crystal types embedded in the stone.
When mined, these deposits relinquish their treasures while the stone substrate remains unbroken. Further mining will harvest the stone itself. Once you have obtained these precious resources, you will be able to refine them into pure cubatoms! These may then be used further in your expanded factory system (more on that later.)
Now, here is the really fun part, we've decided to let the community suggest potential names for these new instantiations of mineable minerals!

Thanks to Kupu i have some sample textures of what the sixteen new cubatom types will look like in their ingot (a placeable block) form.
