The similarity stops at a block grid.
Mining is equally boring in both games.

To compare them is like comparing apples and oranges. Yes, they are both round, but that's about it.
I'd rather say comparing Minecraft with StarMade is like comparing apples with apple cakes.

The main reason that made me abandon Minecraft and come to Starmade back in 2013 was the blueprint system. Today there is MCEdit, but it is just far more complicated to use, and back in time there were no such tools.
MCEdit did exist back then, my oldest blueprints (aka schematics) are from 2011. If you know how it works MCEdit is even easier to handle, especially copy/pasting, which currently isn't really user friendly in StarMade.

Honestly, I would have to say that the similarity ends at the about three words. These words being mining, crafting, and blocks

You forgot building and combat, and that's basically what you do in both games.

However, building an combat are different.
When building, you have ABM(advanced build mode)
When fighting, you fight with the structures you built, and not some handheld weapons you crafted.

So, fighting with modular ship mounted guns and fighting with generic and identical swords is the same thing? Is that what you're saying?

There IS combat. Combat against NPCs. Combat against players, and combat between factions. The method doesn't really matter.

You have blocks to build with, things to kill, and places to explore. Bam. That's the criteria for "Minecraft in space" to most people.

I think the schine team refer to starmade as a mine craft inspired space sim because they feel inclined to give the developers of MC credit, but did mojang give much credit to the people who inspired mine craft? No.

On another note, schema, never sell this game to Microsoft. NEVAH

You forget TNT cannons. They can be modified in various ways, single-shot or shotgun, more range, more power. Does that sound familiar somehow?

    Edit:
So, fighting with modular ship mounted guns and fighting with generic and identical swords is the same thing? Is that what you're saying?
Nope. I'm talking about similiarities of game concepts on a more abstract level, not about everything being identical.

In all fairness, Notch has mentioned Infiniminer as what led him to make Minecraft. Though, literally just about everything Notch has done before and after Minecraft is "X inspired by Y". That's why once he got all his money he stopped doing anything serious. He has no real creative drive, just a tendency to imitate what he likes or do whatever is in his head at the moment until he gets bored of it. Which is also why he had so much half-finished features that he had to hand off to Jeb.

Starmade being "Minecraft inspired" is apt whether Schema got the idea from Minecraft or does it just for easy comparison. Regardless, it's grown well beyond the scope of Minecraft into a distinct game, just like what happens with most game genres. Doom and Wolfenstien birthed the FPS genre just to name a similar situation. I just hope Starmade never gets the community of 12 year olds Minecraft ended up getting stuck with.

But you can also fly in any direction without a "max build high", explore more round that infinite plane planets, and use the advanced physics side for amazing stuff (I made a lock with tumblers and a ship that works as a key :P), keptick is quite right, the site doesn't say it's Minecraft inspired anymore either. :)

Plus if you think Minecraft is boring/same thing over and over I suggest you try the Mineplex server, you have no idea...

Regardless, it's still building, combat, and exploration.
A kid's parents will see it and think "Minecraft in space", too.

No matter how we try to worm our way out of it, we still have the problem of people describing it like this.

IMO it isn't really a problem, provided a "and more" is added :P

However, if I'm not mistaken you need to be an admin or possess the game world file in order to do such things.

I don't see what's so wrong with the comparison between the two games... Sure, they're different, but both are (supposed to be) games where you survive in a world of blocks. Only difference is that in SM you customize a ship and fly it in a three-dimensional but somewhat monotonous world, and in MC you carry everything around with you besides your base(s) and walk around on the ground of a single, expansive (but slightly repetitive) world.

Calling Star-Made "MineCraft in Space!" is like calling MineCraft "Tetris with sheep!".
    It's rather misleading.

In minecraft you only have what you are given. You can't really do much with anything, except for redstone, but that also has its limits. At least in starmade your "pickaxe" can be made to look like a whale and your "sword" can be made to look like a fancy disco. And let's not forget how small minecraft is in comparison to starmade. The "universe" in minecraft has quite small set limits, especially in the y-axis (let's just assume that nothing bad happens all the way at the top).

Point is, minecraft is a tiny little ant compared to starmade. And starmade is then earth. The ratio ant : earth is, well, very small (ant is divided by earth).

I really can't wait until the day finally arrives that minecraft us "starmade without things to actually do".

I agree, a game should be what it is, if you relate it to things you might end up with SM in Minecraft in space which is Tetris with sheep which is pixels on a screen and I hate screens so SM sucks. *phew!*

SM has a whole ton of different things that Minecraft either isn't about or is far from having, let's leave it as: SM=Space Sim MC=Survival Game
