There's only one type of reactor. It makes power. You need stabilizers to get full power out of it, and to keep the reactor from exploding as easily. Stabilizers work better when they're farther away, but if you put more stabilizers on different sides of the reactor, you can put them closer together.
You might be thinking of the old kind of reactor, and the aux power. Don't worry about those. They're no longer used. They're relics of the past.

When you load up the game, get in build mode then you should be able to access the menu for reactor chambers, there should be a graphical tree that shows the various chambers. Blue line indicate connections to auxiliary chambers, green indicates that chamber can be upgraded with the level system. Whole process is very clunky, non-intuitive mess. No idea why some effects can be made stronger with no mass increase and others require more mass to be more effective. The old computer/system block method was far more intuitive, elegant and allowed far more customization.
An efficient reactor will be one that has 9, 19, 199, 1999, 19999 etc reactor blocks. This is size of a reactor when it has the maximum possible Reactor:Chamber ratio of 4:1. IE: Build your reactors to size 1, 10, 19, 28, 37, 46, 55 etc, to minimize the combined mass of your power system and chambers.
EDIT: Maybe stating the obvious but the more chamber groups you have the more important this becomes.
