There's cost and then there's cost. The server and bandwidth is probably not that much. The time required to set it up, manage it, and also manage the game in the way you want... that is what wears people out.

I dig that, I've been an admin for a server twice, both for like, two month stints; it did get tiresome. But I've never been the money-man before, that's what I'm curious about. Since I'm an adult with a job or whatever now.
