This does not look like a bug, its more a support case.
However, the bug tracker is not meant for support.
So lets continue here.
How do you try to start the game?
The Bug-report contained the attempt to launch the game without the starter, this is not an intended way, as you should run into trouble updating the game then.
However, please try to create a new installation with a new obtained launcher from our site according to this guide:
Reference installation
You can ignore the "desktop" warnings, as long as you try to install it in your /home/user/starmade directory you should be fine.
Dont forget to point the launcher to that directory to allow the installation to be created from scratch.
It should create logs in the subdirectory there, after the preparing of the installation has finished, quit the launcher and start it again, it should immediately create a logs directory inside the installation.
Now when trying to start the game there should be more lines appended to the log, if that attempt fails, please upload all log files that were generated in the directory here. (some .lck files are 0 byte and may fail to upload/zip depending on program)
