Do you think this would help lag as well as creativity?

I have to agree with this. Instead of using a ship core for turrets why not create a turret block with the bobby ai built into it?

Unlimited docked entities can also be used as a whole-server griefing tactic. Earlier this week griefers raging over continued enforcement of a long-standing bricknaught ban tried to "go out with a bang" by "crashing the server for good" with a "bomb"; basically ~200 docked entities trapped inside a small ship's hull.

It'd be nice if there was a docked entity limiter in the config file for this kind of thing. We have a docked Entity Chain Limit but no overall docked Entity Limit.

Config Limit On Chains, Singles (AKA chain heads), and global would help. Having a chain start limit be separate from the global limit would help too.
Docked Entity Chain Limit: ???? : Already in game
Docked Entity Chain Start: ???? : How many heads of chains of docked entities?
Global Docked Entity Count Limit: ????? How many entities in total including those in chains?

For Chain start it doesn't care how many are in the chain, while global does. The reason for having it like this is so you can limit things a little better without killing other things at the same time.

    That said, a bricknaught????? o_O

Also they're doing it wrong if they want to crash a server. There are people here you could perma kill servers in way less blocks. XD

Pretty sad TBH; one glance at logs and an admin command or two, and it would have been a solved issue. Hardly a perma kill. Although it would have fulfilled what had become a recurring attention-seeking behavior, and it would have further frustrated legitimate players.

About the limits though. There is an existing chain limit, but it does nothing to stop 200 entities from being docked to a "root entity".

This is difficult to sort, as I've seen some really nifty door and ship designs leveraging docked entities, and an entity limit could hurt design creativity there.

How about just a single rotating block, instead of relying upon docking modules? As for identifying which blocks move along a rotating axis, require them to be linked, akin to how computers currently link with cannons for instance. It all then becomes truly part of a core entity, and effecting a config limit on that would seem more straightforward/direct.

Edit: adding more to rotating block idea
