I think this is a great idea. In addition to the stated game balance effects above, there are also some immersion-related perks to keptick's suggestion.
By having permanent harvester stations on planets, you're tied to that planet. You're going to be leaving and returning to it frequently, so you're going to want a place to dock your ship. You need the harvester and enhancer modules, so you need some sort of mine structure. It'll need power, shields, and probably some turrets for defence.
In short, you'll be building colonies. That's something this game is really missing: there's no reason at all currently to go out and civilize the galaxy, even a little bit. Now? There absolutely will be. There will be planets that you'll be returning to time and time again, if only to collect mined resources, which means you'll get invested in the place.

Important: This idea will only work if the harvester blocks continue to produce resources when the planet isn't loaded, probably by simply comparing the last time it was loaded every time someone goes to the planet with the current time, and extrapolating resource production based off of that.

i believe that goes without saying.

Eh. Maybe, if your home base/shipyard is right next to the planet you are building. But if you're mining on a distant planet or you don't have any materials, then that wouldn't work. Then there are people like me, who despise shipbuilding.

Also, you could high five your crew men. Mining on a distant world in a distant galaxy, the tedium and void of space punctured by the sounds of thousands of crew members high fiving each other. Slap. Slap. Slap.
This is real useful input here. I think the game mechanics should be build around people who really don´t want to build anything. They shouldn´t be forced to build. Building is great and something this game does really well but getting enough content to provide activitys without the need to build anything would be so much win for this game.

    You dont like ship building?

    I don't Even....
Yeah, but that's just me. I'm not really that bad at at it, I just don't like it. A lot of people don't, ether. Currently, if you don't want to ship build, you are out of luck. There needs to be something else to do. But anyways! If Star made is a sand box, it needs to cater to various types of gameplay, not just ship building.

This is why Tomino_Sama has been pushing Crafting so hard on the MFleet server - there are a LOT of builders there, but we also need a lot of crafter dudes to keep up with demand. More economy! More flow! More Spaceships! :D

Yeah! Miners, fighters, marines, and explorers are what this game needs. ((Please see this thread: http://starmadedock.net/threads/a-manifesto-on-crewability.4329/)). With this suggestion, though, a miner would have a completely new definition. You could live on a planet and stuff. That would be great

First though, planets need to be less.....demanding.

That's an optimization thing, and the only way i see that happening is if schema buys all of us half-decent gaming desktops with 16gb of RAM. :D

But that's so boring. It's like auto attack. There should be auto mining, but a way to participate in your mining if you have nothing to do. Like access it through a computer and direct the energy flow so it increases yield per tick or so it drains power from the thrusters to it. Or recode it to make one long continuous stream with a low yield. Or increase the power at the cost of having to maintain and fix it quickly else it might explode. That would be fun.
    between
    mining asteroids
    ,
    Building ships
    ,
    and
    defending it from attack
, you'll have your hands full

it doesn't effect the game's boringness at all. like seriously, it'll just be one less thing to do and will give the game less tedium as well as giving territory more purpose.

Sounds to me like "Windows 8 should totally be built around tablet users".
Yeah, if a game in which already everything can be build has enough nonbuild content to provide a full game to people without the need to build anything it is like windows 8 for tablets only. Seems legit.

Progression through building is the standard. I would like to see an array of ships of varying mass ( NOT size class named since that's such a contested subject) These ships should be default buyable (still have crafting progression with the new bps) and should scale as pirate ships depending on location and distance to the closest pirate station.

Most servers already have this though, and its slightly off topic...I'll leave now...*shamefully slips out*

Pirates happen very little. And not everyone likes building ships. Also, mining asteroids is equally dull. I don't want auto attack. I want to attack. Besides, admit it, being a factory miner on a distant, barren planet would be cool. You'd spend your days navigating the twisting tunnels of mining shafts, delivering nanites to a certain location with your AI friends. You could spend time at the surface, ordering AI around to buff things, or doing some serious computer work to make your factories a little faster. It would be awesome. That, on top of ship building, combat, and asteroids would make the game so much better. Also, you could enslave people to work in your factories.

Not entirely sure how many non-Builders will find that funner than Completing quests. Which will be the best thing to do with all the stuff that we build.

Completing quests isn't something that you can do if you're on a planet, also. Also, if you're a new player starting out the game, you may not have the materials to complete the quest. Or maybe you just don't want to do anything.

I really don't see what the point is here. Having to maintain and defend planets would take a lot more work and time than just mining. And if you like mining that much, then mine! You'll get EVEN MORE resources from the planets combined with your mining. The entire premise of "but there would be less things to do" just doesn't make sense.

Seriously guys, don't try to find a problem where there isn't one.
