Break away and collision damage can both be seperately enabled on the server config file. That's right, what you're asking for already exists!!! :D
Word of warning: it's fairly unstable at the moment, don't enable either of those two options if you game on a potato (or it will start cooking).
Engine optimization usually comes around in beta, or in minecraft's case, never.
Optimizing the engine when any further addition could completely mess it up again is just a waste of time. However, keeping the game playable is also important, and that's what schema has been doing.
I suggested the exact same thing in a faction's thread (I think it was the DFN). But I never got the motivation to make a full post like this. And to be honest, you laid it out a lot better than I ever could.

Are we allowed to make dungeon style stations? I've been thinking of making a derelict version of my station where people have to go through the (now opened) cell area in order to access the main reactor and reactivate it. All in order to open the vault containing the prisoner belonging (loot!)...
As I said, that's the PRISON CELLS. The staff facilities will be located in the upper portion (which doesn't exist yet). Besides, why would you assume that alien psychology works the same as ours do hmmm?
That's really just 40% of the station you're seeing there :P
SUBJECT CHANGE
Here is a little preview of my prison station. I've got the containment cells done so far :D. With the red "ALERT" lights of course (which will probably blink in the future, idk yet)
Keep in mind that the total damage per second of every weapon combo (for the total amount of weapon blocks) is the exact same. Apart maybe for the slaved beam (long range) combos.
