I'm not completely sold on this being in vanilla Starmade, but it does sound like fun. This sounds like a great mod where the frontier is being over run.

I'm down for crawling and basic cover system. I really want boarding to be a thing and be fun. So when we get NPC factions boarding and looting the cargo ships is awesome.
I simply want them to learn like they do in FTL. It sucks when they die but you hire more and get back to work. It would be great if they have quips but they don't have to.

Yes this, I'm having so much fun building out the storage systems and really thinking about how this changes the game. You've gotta be a little strategic about how you move your resources and where they are currently. This totally opens up so much role play for cargo raids as well.

Currency is close but I'm looking at it as influence. I'm hoping it acts like a stand in for micro managing politics. So possibly being able to sell/buy sectors from the npcs and other factions without war. Or create allies for a cost.
