Space travel is about redundancy. Having a secondary or even a tertiary bridge or control room make a lot of sense. When I was aboard naval vessels they had secondary bridges or at least secondary conning positions.
For very small situations like a small escape pod. It would be nice to have a blinking beacon broadcasting a distress signal.
From the title of the thread I was thinking changes to beacons but I can see the confusion.
This will require a new weapon system, HARPOONS with cables. Just make sure your ship has more mass than the whale or you'll get pulled along.

Don't forget to sacrifice an old SVGA card to Inverticus the Greek God of large inverters. With out this your quest might well fail. At which point Resetus Maxima might not even be able to save you.
I was thinking about this a while ago too. I didn't get around to playing with it as I rebuilt the station where I wanted to do this. I would assume this would work like a gravity elevator just horizontally instead of vertical.
I don't see this as greifing. IMO greifing is would be doing something to a ship/structure that isn't yours when no one is there to defend it. Using a tactic that works is just that a tactic. I hit and run tactics and tag teaming are another one that people complain about. These tactics work not...
I did similar things on a minecraft server awhile back. You're right its not hard on a Linux box. I used it to give access to some admin commands on an vanilla server. Works well.
I don't have a use for it right now, but can certainly see a use for it for others. Adding this kind of functionality should be a no-brainer. As Edymnion said it should be fairly easy and quick to implement.
