did you use the Launcher from this page (under downloads at top of screen) to install a new version of the game (its the same game as the one on steam, only the launcher is different) ?

If not -> get the Launcher from the download section here. Place it in a new folder (C:NewStarMade would do) and restart that launcher than from there and let it download a new copie of the game (to be sure in the Launcher : Options-> Installation settings->Path choose the new starmade folder there)

Other people had problems installing the Steam version, data corruption or something like that.
other than that it could be that your system is not capable to run the server and client at the same time (that is basicaly what you do on singleplayer) then you would have to stay with other peoples multiplayer servers

We had a few support cases with a that persistent error on connecting to localhost.

Please try reinstalling avast, we had a case where it blocked local connections for no reason, and right on giving up, it turned out other java games were suffering the same problem.

So if not done yet, update to newest avast version, and if already done, reinstall it.
THEN remove all java versions from your computer and reinstall the latest from here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk8-downloads-2133151.html

Then try again, if this does not help.
Use this article to create a reference installation:

Now attach any logs that get generated in C:\Starmade as a zip file to this ticket. Or send them to [email protected] via mail and put a reference to this thread in the mail content, so I can pick the files up from there.
