Change missiles into plasma torpedoes because...

    I see that missiles now (dev build) use power, which I like, but to make more sense, why not call them plasma torpedoes instead of missiles, since power is used.

    Vakna also said this in a very good way, that if we use antimatter cannons and energy shields, why do we then use chemically propelled projectiles?

    Also it seems kind of odd that a ship using energy shields and anti-matter cannons still uses chemical propelled missiles. :)

    Well basicaly, a missile is supposed to have some explosive charges. Hence, propelling them with energy might be a little unstable ( i'm not an anti-matter cannons specialist ) and it would only be able to give a impulsion at start. Or you want the missile to be fast and maybe able to follow something so it needs propulsion of its own.

    So it would probably be using the same propulsion as ships does. ( Hyperflux coil thrusters ) --> some sort of magnetic particule emitter no ?

    All that depending on my own knowledge, so it might not be correct.

    Edit : In fact, "missile" doesn't mean it's propelled with chemicals ...

    Seems to me that it doesn't matter what they're called, you can imagine them to be whatever. Just color them like, green or something :P
    The idea of a plasma based explosive shot seems fine to me, especially considering that you don't have any limited number of missiles on board your ship.

    I guess so...anyway it will just make more sense, but the reason why I didn't mention the above was because I think that will be something in the new update when you place a light under the computer and the weapon fires that colour.

    Who says the missiles are chemically powered? They could use ion engines, which would account for their stupid slow speed.

    I the new update they are drastically buffed! :D
    Well the powers of SCIENCE! (Yes, its a technical term) could have Ion powered rockets that go much faster. Or, they could use plasma engines. Plasma Torpedo just sounds kinda... lame.

    Could stay with consistancy and call them "Anti-Matter Rockets".

    Yeah, I go on that philosophy. Leave them vague so we can either make up our own stuff or endlessly speculate over what powers them. Photon Torpedoes, Concussion Missiles, etc.

    On that note, did AMCs ever get changed into just cannons in the dev build? I really don't mind either way, but the chart referred to them as just cannons. I was curious if that's what they're going with going forward.

    I would say that those slow firing cannons (with nova slave) is pretty close to photon torpedos. I kind of like missiles as the one weapon systems without extreme power needs...


    Also, you can now link lights to your weapons instead of putting them under the cpus

    Oh thank god. I was looking forward to the lights coloring beams, etc., but specifically being under the computer was kind of silly, and might make it a little tricky to implement in smaller craft.

    I also think the names should be as simple as possible and let the players/servers fill in lore/flavor text.

    As I see it, there are two ways to handle missiles, consume power or consume ammo. For simplicity Starmade opts to consume power but I know there was some discussion about trying out the ammo option in one of the live streams but here is not the place to discuss that. Now with infinite ammo and missiles consuming power it is obvious that the power goes towards the replication technology that allows for limitless missiles.

    Power consumed + replication technology = unlimited missiles.

    Yeah I havent texted the balance of missiles yet in the dev build but I know the last time I checked the power requirements/damage of cannons themselves were kind of high. Now that shields should be working I can finally get some proper dog fight tests done but preliminary predictions don't seem promising.

    logic is that since missiles use power they are now a kind of energy missiles, or plasma torpedo, maybe even photon torpedo...

    Any kind of missile or rocket that leaves smoke trails is chemically propelled, Ion engines don't leave that trail, neither are they capable of enough acceleration to cross a section of space in reasonable time (like, even slower than current missiles) Also, Ion engines don't work in an atmosphere, so you wouldn't be able to fire planet based missiles.

    It's archaic technology compared to what other things are in Starmade, I'd much prefer is they just turned them into blobs of plasma being fired at the same speed as AMC's.
