So my friend asked me to confirm he had correctly protected his account... and he hadn't. Now his name is protected by my account. I trust him enough with my credentials to get by for now, but is there any way to revoke my inadvertent claim so he can recover his character?

The game account on a multiplayer server or did he connect his Steam account to your SM account (or the other way around ?)
The MP account is saved local to the server. There is an admin command to unprotect the Username on servers.
