So I've noticed that StarMade uses Tons of my CPU and I can't do much else while running the game. I've tried turning off/on the Frame cap, v-sync, and bump mapping, changing resolutions and no matter what I do it uses tons of CPU any help is appreciated. I don't even run it at max resolution either.

It's because it's alpha, i'm not a PC specialist but only Alpha would do this.

EDIT: There was a fix for the CPU usage, but there might be more.

    Hello there,
please create a second installation by using this guide.
Do not change any options, just launch into the game,
if it works good, please compare the settings.cfg file from both installations step by step (http://www.diffchecker.com/ really helps with that ^^)
and see what causes the problems.
100% cpu can also be caused by very low ram, or accidentally running in 32bit mode somehow.

32bit mode is easily seen by looking into the titlebar of the starting game, the 32bit version has a [32bit] attached.
If this is not showing up, read this.

If all seems fine, and all settings are 'back to default' but the game still seems to run bad, please wipe the /StarMade/logs directory,
start the game, try to stay in the game 5-10 minutes, then quit.
Now upload the whole /logs directory zipped in this thread. =)
    Will look into it then.

Well I also like to point out that it only happens when I run singleplayer. If I use the bat file in the install to set up a windows server and join it, it doesn't use much CPU at all only when I load a big ship it usually goes to 100%. And I'll do what you mentioned with the logs.

Does not look like there is any collision or problem with your game.

    Compared our settings.

    http://www.diffchecker.com/6flg88xi

    Red: My setting
    Green: Your setting

    Try using:
    Fixed Framerate: On
    Procedural Background Resolution: 1024

As we have 'sort of comparable hardware specs', this should help a lot.

Also make sure you didn't set memory to 2048 for server and client,
read this for information how to set it up.

My system isn't much different but it performs just fine.
    Windows 7 64bit
AMD APU A8-3850 quad core 2.9Ghz
    AMD 260x card
    8gig mem
    resolution same as yours 1680x1050
    2 Tb harddisk
    560 Gb SSD
My net speed is a bit higher 10 UP 50 down but that won't effect performance

I noticed moving the game to the SSD gets rid of most of the start up time where it jumps to 100%
After about 10 seconds I sit between 37 and 50% cpu mostly at the low end and my frame rate is averages between 56 and 72 fps

Increasing the size of sectors made a good boost in that planets were not close enough to bog down the system by more than 1 loading at a time. The very first game I played the very first system had 4 planets in a row.

As for memory I have mine set to 1024 early generation 2048 and 4096 maximal
    I run 64bit Java.

Since making the changes it works great.

I'm in the same boat, actually; Intel i3-3220 here. I blame the fact that my CPU sucks, though. :\
