Starmade Randomly Freezes In-game

At random moments while I am in game Starmade will freeze up. It doesn't freeze completely; I still hear noises when I press pause or inventory. If I tab to another application and then tab back then the Starmade screen goes completely black.

The only way I can stop the display freeze is by restarting the application. It happens about once every 10 mins to an hour.

The freezes seem to be completely spontaneous. The only clue I've found is that I tend to be in build mode when it happens.

Model: Satelite C55-B
Processor: Intel Celeron CPU N 2830 @ 2.16gHz
RAM: 4GBs
System: 64 Bit
Graphics Card: Intel HD Graphics
Java: Version 8 Standard Edition

EDIT: I was actually running java 8

yes, update java, and make sure you manually install a 64 bit variant.
Most systems use by default a browser in 32bit mode, thus any autodetect installs 32bit only.
This causes huge performance limitations and memory issues.

I was getting strange game hangups due to my SSD settings. I adjusted several SSD settings as well as disabling indexing on my larger drives. Having done all that at once, I couldn't tell you exactly what solved the issue, but it may be worth looking up some SSD optimization recommendations.
