This is a quick and simple idea that i think might add a little push towards players having more insentive towards expanding.

Spacestations can only have one use
but what does this mean exactly? well for starters it means that stations ccould only have one type of block Ex. shipyard stuff, factory stuff, and trade stuff. hou
    • this could be managed through a new popup or an addition the the existing one when creating a station which has a drop down and a few options which sets the role of the station and which blocks can be placed.
    • since stations would be limited the base cost of a station should be lowered or there could be the addition of a new block akin to a ship core but for stations, it would function like a normal build block with the exception of allowing a player to create a station at a greatly reduced cost but the block itsrlf would be very expensive to produce and buy from shops (one should be provided to player upon entering a world for the first time)
    • one of each factory and other production blocks will still be allowed on all types of stations since it would somewhat gamebreaking to stunt a players progress if they accidentaly built the wrong station (on this note there should be a way wether through a new option in the faction block or a new menu for station)
    • Optional: instead of restricting blocks allowed to be placed the specific roles provide boosts to the blocks that pretain to its role, for example a cargo statiom would have 10% more cargo space than any other role (also if a way to change the role of a station in this format it should take a period of time to switch to the other role, meaning you cannot switch between roles and get the buffs with no drawback, this should be a large time like 30 minutes to an hour)
trying to type this up on a tablet was a horrible idea

i like the idea, it would require more specialization for station design, which I like. in order to do this, a automated cargo fleet would be required to shuttle cargo from mining posts to storage stations. and from there to factories and shipyards. this could fit right in with fleets!

Like the idea of having single purpose stations but really not a fan of doing it this hamhandedly...

Would much rather see mechanics introduced that makes specializing a station much more sensible, something like this:

Read by Council - Factory progression block
a system like that would be nice for later game, but what im talking about in this idea is a way to make players want to expand instead of hunkering down in one giagantic station because it would make it more efficient to have 3 stations doing 3 different tasks than to have one station do all three tasks

I could see this idea really paying off if done right. Perhaps even having some built in bonuses to sweeten the deal would work as well. A defense station for example could have a significant bonus to shield capacity and regen for example. A factory station could have bonuses to enhancer output etc.

You'd just put all the stations next to each other, even encase some stations inside others.

Trying to force diversification like this just sucks.

Most server's configs prevent more than one station being in a sector, save for when an admin spawns or moves a station into a sector.

Having dependencies between facilities wouldn't be a bad thing, as that would add a whole new dimension to the way you would have to spread out and protect your assets. A huge problem right now is people just throwing everything in the home base and needing nothing else to survive.

i think there should probobly be a base limit of stations per sector of 1
and if you go for something like the optional route its not forced but insentivised because its more efficient

We already have this, it's called server rules.

    bad idea
servers can alter the rules all they want but i want to add this to the base game to insentivise expansion because as i see the game now there is not much reason to create a second spacestation over expanding your first one(now that i think about it more the optional route seems like the better option with choices not being forced but being more efficient when split into multiple stations doing one task each)

That is fin and i can respect you want something else. But to me one of the strengths of SM is the freedom and open nature of the game, this idea goes straight against that.
On top of that why not let people sit in there homebase all day if that is what they like, how does that effect you negatively ?

After looking at it i think that you're right about the freedom part, mabey the original version is not the best thought out plan but hey thats why i posted it here to get feedback and improve my idea, thats also why i added the optional part which seems like a better plan since its not restricting you but instead encouraging you to build new stations and expand through buffs to the specific role of the station.

As i currently see it people have no reason to expand from one spacestation since only one of your stations can be invincible at any one time this idea is meant to encourage players to make multiple stations(you could still have your giant invincible station) and since you can only make one station invincible it makes wars on servers much more intersting because you can go after strategic assets, Ex. you want to stunt their shipbuilding you destroy a factory station so they lose some production of blocks

I think this merges into Capitalships / Motherships or other big ships used as homebases, because it is about the same problem.
    Multipurpose vs Specialisation

Multipurpose should be allowed, but at a lower tier.
If you choose to specialize, you need multiple entities with a higher efficiency of the whole.
