Since when did stars shoot missiles?

    Should sun damage be nerfed?

Any player misfortunate enough to fly remotely close to a star hoping to score a last second tan, will find massive holes in the side of your ships. WTF! Last I checked, I didn't see missiles streaking out of the sun, destined to blow holes in you ship. Ive already lost 3 ships to this extreme sun damage, and I think a change is in order. Star burn, they don't shoot. So why is my armor on one side not just slowly melting away, like it should? My ship had in upwards of 5mil armor, and it is covered with 2layer thick standard hull, yet in the short time it took to jump out of system (10seconds or so), the ship was decimated. Craters breached all the way through my systems down and blew up my elevators and rooms, leaving my ship in ruins. Anyone else believe that Schine went a bit nuts with explosive sun damage, and it should be nerfed just a bit? Anyone have any tips to prevent this from happening? And yes, I know they are planning on adding heat armor or what ever, but until then, we cannot continue loosing our ships by just flying a few sectors away.

This change has been around for a while now. Just stay away from suns from now on and you won't have any issues.

that is partially the point to stars, you don't fly too close to them. and sun damage scales with how large the ship is, so if it is a big ship it will get destroyed, and if it is small it might survive.

my top tip is to not fly into a star.

A quick search of the server.cfg file and I found this...

STAR_DAMAGE = true //suns dealing damage to entities

If you're in singleplayer it might work.

I personally like that stars do damage. I just dislike the lack of an early warning and lack of options to deal with it.

If the vote included an option for 'tiny Nerf' I would have voted. (Not fond of false dichotomy in poll form ;))

Star-damage forces people to actually plot and navigate their 'jumps to light-speed' to account for...what was Han's list?...

    -Flying into asteroid field.
-Flying too close to a sun.
-Getting caught in rush hour traffic (I think, it's been a while).

I'd much appreciate it if there were simple things like a meter showing hull temperature (aka, how close you are to taking heat damage) and maybe a warning system for "This jump will take you too close to a star, do you want to jump anyway?".

I don't want it nerfed, but definitely changed. I would prefer to see large "scorched" patches on my ship, rather than little holes everywhere like the ship was splattered with acid. Dividing sun damage evenly across exposed adjacent blocks might be better.

Yeah, it might help the game to destroy entire chunks (formerly 16^3, soon to be 32^3 sets of blocks) that face the nearby star, instead of a bunch of separate, individual blocks, when too close to the sun. This would serve to relieve workload on the computer, and keep damage isolated to logical, easily-found areas (the afore-mentioned destroyed chunks that face the star.)

Edit: go back to damaging individual blocks if the ship is small enough that an entire chunk would consist of more than 10% of the ship's total blocks....

The main reason why they did this, I think, is to make suns scarier; people used to be able to fly into the sun and just tank the damage, which is not the way it's supposed to work... Also, because the old method hit one block at a time. The "realistic" alternative - using raytests to check each block on the ship and burn all of the ones that are exposed to the sun - might cause performance issues.

I say it should be like flying into a wall of beams that steadily expand outward into a cone shape. So like a huge AOE beam coming from the Central point of the sun. Targets sun side of things first and burns to the dark side of them.

We were going to be given a heat block when they upgraded the sun to heatseeker missiles.

I wish shields aided in the defense or even a better warning like a countdown with an alert sound!

Currently its just a 20sec warning box that appears for 2secs where the server autosave notice appears, its so easy to miss.

Can only think that you're using the default 2km sectors, otherwise you learn to stay away from them very quickly
However at defaults, you stop paying attention for 30 seconds in combat and you have drifted through 7 different stars and tasted the whole rainbow.

The scorched thing gave me an idea, what if instead of blowing holes in your ship, the explosions converted the blocks into useless charcoal blocks. So if you left your ship near the sun long enough, it would be a non-functioning charcoal block model of it's former self.

Also, the charcoal blocks would only have 1 hp.

Smaller ships being able to survive? WTF? Why is that a thing? If you have a massive ship with millions of armor, then it should be able to withstand flying a few sectors away from the sun. And I'm not talking about flying into a star, duh, I'm talking about how you can fly 1-2 sectors out from the sun, and your ship will still get decimated.

Currently the damage is scaled off of ship mass. So yes, large ships get the shaft currently.

I agree, And for me it gives me a 5 second warning. I was able to jump (had a fully charged jump drive just in case), but my ship still got fucked. I agree that shields should mitigate the damage, at least for a little bit of time.

I understand that, but I find it ridiculous that a shuttle can survive being in a sun, longer than the capital ship it came from.

The damage could just scale with distance, the farthest away where sun damage still applies, your ship would slowly accumulate damage, displayed in the increasing tiers of damage masks(that thing that makes damaged blocks look darker and more damaged). It would only get the last version of this, but the next sector in would cause physical block damage. I agree 100%, that if your inside a star you should be fucked, so that's the last stage, is inside the star, where you jump in your shuttle to survive the sun with its mass scaled damage.

I once parked my ship near the sun and ran around the interior in astronaut mode trying to avoid death. The longer you survive the more daring you get. Great Fun.

It would be nice if your jump drive dropped you out of jump early rather than into a sun sector (say due to gravity).

Current default is 5km sectors, if it's 2km in-game then it is bugged (it's definitely supposed to be 5km).

TrickyNicky27 Did it happen to be a blue star by any chance? Because the damage those things dish out is insane :P
