so basically, when a ship is getting ripped to shreds, like say you have a ship that has a stick on the front end
well if an enemy were to shear off that stick via cannons beams or what ever means then the stick would become a new floating entity, kind of like an asteriodical entity, and this would apply to all objects, so no more floating parts, and introduce a new block to counter this, the invisible structure block. basically it tells the game engine that said part is supposed to be floating or not floating, it has no physics, and it just goes on a ship and it actually goes on the floating entity with no valid connected path between the core and that entity. so basically any unconnected part must be identified as connected via the new invisible structure block.

This is actually in the game, but turned off by default due to bugs. But try it sometime, I think the config setting is something like BREAK_OFF

Edit: that being said, I'd love to see some of the bugs worked out so we could turn it on. it is immensely satisfying to "break a ships back" and watch the two pieces go tumbling away.

Would also drastically change combat, IMO, when you could start getting high powered beams that literally slice sections of your ship off like a razor blade.

And ship design, too, since you'd want to avoid any thin sections that can be easily severed. Borg Cubes would be the best design strategy.

Doesn't everyone target you if you make a cube anyways? :giggle:

Armour placement would definitely be more in-depth, making players think not only about protecting stuff behind the armour, but also whether their ship could be split in-half at another weaker point.

And that is specifically one of the reasons why, I prefer if it's off by default-
