I have a tendency to come home with turrets shot up but the mothership fully intact. This is annoying. There's no reason to scrap the mothership, but replacing turrets is not a fun job.

We all know by now what a BAD idea sharing shields with turrets would be. Capital ships would be nearly invincible. Still, turrets' defenses are often pathetically insufficient, so I thought of a compromise: share defensive effects with turrets. The objective is to distribute defense more evenly between turrets and mothership.

In order to balance this correctly, turrets must be added into the mass percentage calculation of defensive effects. Otherwise this will become a straight up, heavy buff to large ships with many turrets. This way, a ship that currently has 25% ion defense will lose a portion of that defense to its turrets, while the turrets gain some hardening. It's a buff to turrets and a nerf to the mothership, so this should be reasonably balanced. At most, this will give a slight advantage overall.

What about those of us that use turrets and docked modules to reduce the mass of the main ship, and thus don't need as many effects?

I dunno man. Something that strengthens those really big cap ship turrets seems sketchy, even if some of the effect bonuses are taken from the mothership.

IMO once the shipyard system is in and we can easily replace & repair turrets out of combat everything will be alright. Losing turrets should be expected, it's just that right now they're annoying as hell to replace after every single sortie.

This would alter the defensive characteristics of your vessel, making the docked modules and turrets tougher while weakening the mothership.

To me, turrets just seem a bit too flimsy, even if they focus quite a bit on shielding and use advanced armor. Maybe I'm just crazy...
That is a good point about shipyards. I hope that gets hurried up, though. I don't like going into challenging combat scenarios right now because it's a huge hassle to get the ship back in good condition afterward.

Which is why it is bad. Most of the modules are embedded inside the ship with only a small area exposed to the outside. The main ship is intended to envelop and protect them. The design is probably the opposite of what you thought it was.

If I wanted effects on my turrets, I would push to let AI be able to use effects. Not like effects would really increase the survive-ability on anything but large turrets by any significant amount anyways.

I'm with Ace on this, once shipyards are in, losing turrets will not be such a drag any more. Also, we should wait for the new turret system and rails before we go off and decide that it needs to be changed.

Back when you still had to add modules for the mass of your turrets and docked ships when using Ion I pushed for them to get the benefit of Ion defense as well. Schema shot the idea down and fixed it so their mass was not in the calculations.

I would like to see the capability for AI to use defensive effects so turrets can be equipped with them and shield transfer beams that actually worked well.
